Did you know? All Sharyland ISD school buses from the 2018 model year or newer are equipped with three-point seat belts for added safety.

Why Proper Seat Belt Usage Matters

Correct seat belt usage is essential for student safety during bus transportation. When used properly, seat belts can significantly reduce the risk of injury in the event of a sudden stop or collision. Please follow these guidelines to ensure every student is properly secured while riding the school bus.

Proper Seat Belt Usage Guidelines

1 Proper Seating Position: Sit facing forward with your back flat against the seat. Good posture ensures the seat belt works as designed to protect you.
2 Shoulder Belt Placement: Position the shoulder belt across the middle of your chest and shoulder, not touching your neck or face. This distributes force properly in case of a sudden stop.
3 Secure Buckling: Insert the metal latch plate into the buckle until you hear a clear "click" sound, confirming it's properly secured.
4 Lap Belt Position: Place the lap belt low across your hips and upper thighs, not on your stomach. This protects your internal organs in case of impact.
5 Height Adjustments: If the bus has a shoulder height adjuster, use it to ensure the seat belt fits comfortably and securely across your shoulder, not your neck.
6 Check for Proper Fit: Ensure there's no slack or twisting in the straps. The belt should be snug but comfortable, allowing you to move slightly.
7 Backpack Management: Remove backpacks before buckling up and place them on your lap or on the floor between your feet. Never wear a backpack while belted.
8 Individual Use Only: Each seat belt is designed for one person. Never share a seat belt or buckle multiple belts together.
9 When Exiting: When it's time to get off the bus, adjust the shoulder height adjuster back to its original position, unbuckle your seat belt, and allow it to retract fully to its resting position.

Important Reminders:

  • Always wear your seat belt for the entire bus ride
  • Report any damaged or malfunctioning seat belts to the bus driver immediately
  • Help younger students with their seat belts if needed
  • Stay seated with your seat belt fastened until the bus comes to a complete stop

Safety is Everyone's Responsibility

By following these simple seat belt guidelines, you're helping create a safer transportation experience for everyone. Remember, proper seat belt usage is not just a law—it's a vital safety practice that protects all passengers on the school bus.
