Owned an '86 22R for a few months (can see pics in other posts) and have been going through all the typical maintenance checks. I've experienced some weirdness with setting timing using what I think is factory procedure: Warm up engine Engine off - turn crank to cylinder #1 TDC Line up timing mark on pully with 0deg on timing tag Install distributer with rotor lined up with cyl #1 Bypass.
A quick tip to help you set timing on the 22re if you suspect the tps is faulty. Disconnect the tps plug and jumper the two bottom terminals together. this tells the computer that it is really at idle (no throttle angle) you also need to jumper the connector at the fender also.
I don't think that engine has a knock sensor. On my 22R I always fine tuned my ignition timing by ear. My 22R was way more sensitive to ignition timing change than my 22RE's. What octane are you burning? And, did 22RE Performance recommend any octane rating? Did they tell you what the compression ratio is for your engine? Just curious. Gnarls.
With the timing light (and inner vacuum line off and capped) pointed at the lower pulley, turn your distributor until the pointer is at the 0 degree mark. While it's still running, re-connect the inner vacuum advance line, it should jump to about 12 degrees at the timing marks. Connect the second vacuum line next.

3. Using the timing light, slowly turn the distributor until the timing mark on the crank pulley is aligned with the 12° BTDC mark. tighten the distributer bolt. 4. Recheck the distributer timing. 22R - Disconnect vacuum lines from distributor. Ignition timing @ idle (w/vacuum advance off): 0° TDC 22RE, 22R-TE Fig. 18 Check engine connector..
22R-E, 22R-TE 5°BTDC @ idle. If necessary, loosen the distributor bolt and turn the distributor to align the marks. Recheck the timing after tighting the distributor bolt. (22R-E, 22R-TE) Remove the jumper on the check connector. Check that ignition timing advances to 10°- 14°BTDC. Great infomation about that on here Was this answer helpful?
I recently changed spark plugs, checked idle, timing advance and helped save the Earth by keeping the MoreFunner out of the landfill and eliminatin.
