when planning our visit to ireland, we originally thought of spending a few days in dublin and a few days in a town close by.
As we researched potential destinations, we discovered an absolutely stunning variety of beautiful scenery, sights, and culture, and we quickly adjusted our plans to do an rv road trip across the country! to be honest, 7 days was simply not enough to see everything that we wanted to. We were able to see a few towns and cities in central and southern ireland, but definitely could have used more days to see the northern regions as well as northern ireland.
Day 11 finishes off the wild atlantic way in county donegal and takes you into northern ireland. There are no borders when crossing from ireland into northern ireland, so you won’t need to show your passport to anyone. But be aware that driving in northern ireland is not the same as driving in ireland. Speed limits are posted in miles per hour, not kilometers per hour, as they are in ireland. They also use the british pound instead of the euro for currency. Northern ireland is the smallest country in the uk, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm, culture and beauty. One of the reasons we think northern ireland makes a great location for a camping holiday is because it is so compact and everything is easily accessible! steeped in history, dramatic landscapes, stunning beaches and welcoming locals, there are so many places to go and things to see in northern ireland.
It should definitely be on your list of road trips. How long do you need to explore northern ireland?
this is a difficult question and one dependent mostly on the availability of your own time.
This itinerary is very busy and fits a lot in, including time in ireland. It is doable, but just be aware that it will be fast paced with quite a lot of driving. Naturally, you are welcome to take the itinerary and adjust it to meet your own interests and pace. For example, many folks prefer to focus on the uk with their two weeks, and skip the island of ireland, returning instead via the lake district and wales. However, if you want to see as much as possible, this itinerary is how to do it.
We arrived at dublin airport in the morning and immediately set off north to the spaceships rentals pick-up point, located about a 40 minute drive from the airport. For the next 2weeks this would be our little home, carrying us a total of 3,338km (2,074 miles) around ireland. Our first stop was the powerscourt house & gardens , located just south of dublin city, after travelling around the busy ring road. What’s nice is that, once we got off this busy toll road, that is the last of bad motorway traffic we saw in ireland! much of the country is still made up of uncluttered country roads, which is the best way to discover the emerald isle.
