Can anyone tell me the difference between G-05 and G-48 zerex antifreeze fluids? I have a 91 BMW 318i, and the current concensus is that G-48 blue is the stuff to use, as its designed for the aluminum they use in the blocks and heads of the engines. Some people use G.

I ran across this technical bulletin (see attached file) from Valvoline's web site, dated 6/18/2003, stating that they make a G48 spec coolant called Zerex G 48. Interestingly enough, the bulletin specifically states that Zerex G48 is "BMW Approved" so with that in mind, I'm going to continue researching this one and I'll post my findings.
BMW coolant price is in the $40 range, Zerex offers an option of "g48" code they state is compatible with BMW at almost half the price. Should i trust it or bite the bullet and buy BMW?

G48 spec Zerex coolant from Valvoline is exactly the same coolant as manufactured for BMW. This spec is made by many companies, including BASF, etc - however, it's not available retail in North America, unless you go to a dealer.

You should not use generic "anti-freeze", be it a house brand or Prestone. Google "g48 antifreeze" G48 is the BMW standard. Zerex G-05 and others work fine. But they're almost as expensive as the BMW OEM (which is probably Zerex since it's made by Castrol and guess who is BMW's OEM supplier). This to a T!
