If you own a modern BMW with a B46, B48, or B58 engine, a mysterious, persistent coolant leak can be incredibly frustrating. The typical suspect is the oil filter housing gasket (OFHG), but often, fixing it doesn't stop the coolant loss. This guide will uncover why the OFHG is only part of the story and reveal the true culprit, ensuring a permanent fix for your B.
Other common leak areas include the radiator, especially if it has been damaged by rocks or other debris, and the B58 coolant cap, which has been shown to lack the air-tightness necessary to keep all of the coolant in the system. Sometimes, B58 coolant loss can be dependent on other things as well. The BMW B58 inline-six engine is known for its performance and efficiency, but coolant leaks are a common issue that can lead to major repairs if not addressed.
BMW B58 inline-six engine is known for its performance and efficiency, but coolant leaks are a common issue that can lead to major repairs if not addressed. One of the most frequent failure points is the coolant hose connector behind the heat management module. It is a common issue on the B58 due to them running at well over 100ºC at full temperature.
It doesn't take much of a leak or seepage for the coolant to dissapear. The small tank does not but can also leak coolant into the intercooler and get low if the intercooler is failing. All in all, once you find your issue, repair it, then do a vacuum fill and properly bleed the system.
In this video, we break down every coolant issue you can face with a BMW B58 engine. I filled the main reservoir with 24oz of coolant (mixture). I was aware of the BMW SIB (service information bulletin) for air pockets in the coolant system.
I took the car to the dealer and they did a pressure test for leaks and no leaks were found. They drained and bled the coolant system. Fast forward to early September 2022.
