5 Ways People Accidentally Destroy Their Smartphones

Owning a smartphone comes with great responsibility. They’re fragile and break easily. All it takes is one drop out a window or losing it on a rollercoaster ride and your phone is toast. That is, unless you have a tough, rugged phone case, like the Unicorn Beetle PRO, which has been proven to withstand 50-foot drops, getting run over, and being tossed out the window of a car going 50 mph.

Even so, some phone accidents can’t be protected against. You can’t expect any phone case to protect your phone if you flush it down the toilet or fling it off the Eiffel Tower.

With that said, people still push the limits of what phone cases can do by attempting to demolish various types of smartphones. However, some people destroy their phones by accident.

1. The storm drain challenge

There’s a challenge out there where people are encouraged to pinch the corner of their phone while holding it over a storm drain through one of the thin slots. Most of the time, people don’t drop their phone.

However, sometimes they accidentally let go. Or, in this kid’s situation, someone pushes them intentionally, causing them to drop their phone.

It’s hard to watch kids handle expensive devices so carelessly without any regard for the value. They don’t work to earn money, and have no idea why they shouldn’t be doing this challenge in the first place.

2. Smashing a phone through a case

Maybe it’s all the test videos online showing people smashing and throwing smartphones around that inspires kids to try it for themselves at home. The problem is that some kids are too optimistic about their phone case’s ability to withstand repeated blows from a hammer. They set up their video camera and proceed to smash the phone somewhat lightly, but with some force, and when they open the case to reveal the screen, it’s completely shattered and they are absolutely shocked.

Unless you have endless funds, it’s probably not a good idea to smash your phone out of curiosity, especially if someone else bought that phone for you.

3. Babies drop their parents’ phones

Sometimes people drop phones that don’t belong to them, including babies and toddlers. If ever there was a good reason not to give your smartphone to your small child, this video is proof. A couple went on a walk with their older child and baby, and when they stood in front of the storm drain, the baby tossed the phone into the drain.

This was something the husband said he knew was going to happen and it just makes sense. Babies throw things randomly for no apparent reason, so they probably shouldn’t have your smartphone.

4. Jumping around

This kid put his phone on a trampoline in order to film himself jumping and having a good time. However, as he continued to jump, his phone ended up flying off of the trampoline and crashing to the ground.

His phone’s touch ID and volume button broke, along with his screen, which ended up severely cracked.

He’s not the only person to break their phone while engaging in some form of activity. It’s just common sense that if you put your phone in a position that can make it fly around, chances are, it will.

5. Tossing the phone out the window

It’s hard to believe someone might accidentally throw their phone out the window, but this kid did exactly that. While dancing, he somehow let go of his phone and it flew right out the open window of his 5th story apartment.

If you look closely in the video, you’ll see what looks like a laptop and other phones resting on the window sill, which should be nerve-wracking to anyone who cares about their devices. Kids sometimes just don’t have the awareness to know this is risky.

It’s not just kids who break their phones accidentally.

Although YouTube compilations mainly show kids breaking their phones (intentionally and accidentally), adults do it, too. According to data sourced by Forbes, 74% of adults between the ages of 30 and 44 have broken a phone at least once. It happens to everyone, and in some of the strangest ways. For example, people lose their phones on roller coasters all the time. It’s way more common than you may think.

Some people’s phones get destroyed by their dogs and sometimes they throw their phones in anger, not realizing it’s going to break. However, dropping a phone is the most common way people accidentally destroy their phones.
