67482. Journal: February 15, 22, 2026

LEGAL NOTICES NOTIFICATION TO: All Parents of Albuquerque Public Schools Students and All APS Employees FROM: John Dufay, Executive Director, Maintenance and Operations RE: ASBESTOS CONTROL PROGRAM ANNUAL NOTIFICATION According to the requirements of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA-1987), the Local Education Agency is responsible for controlling asbestos in public and private schools. In the past asbestos was widely used in building construction materials. The goal of the Asbestos Control Program is to prevent human exposure to asbestos. AHERA provides the elements for addressing and controlling the presence of asbestos in schools. At any given time the following asbestos activities may be in the planning stages or in progress at APS schools built before October, 1988 including: Asbestos Inspections, Re-Inspections, Periodic Surveillance, Response Actions, Removal and Post Response Actions. APS implements an Operations and Maintenance Program to train custodial and maintenance personnel in the proper work practices and controls for the safe handling of Asbestos. In concurrence with the USEPA, it is the policy of APS to remove asbestos materials only when a damaged condition dictates, or maintenance, renovation or demolition activities necessitate the removal. In these cases, precautions are taken to ensure the health and safety of our staff, students, and neighborhood. The Asbestos Management Plan for each school is available for inspection and is located at the Maintenance and Operations, Environmental Management Department office at 915 Locust Street, SE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87106. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Andrew Roark at 765-5950 Ext.67482 Journal: February 15, 22, 2026
