While it might look dramatic, the fungus itself does not usually penetrate the leaf cells directly, but its presence has significant consequences for the plant's health.
How Powdery Mildew Affects Your Plant

Beyond the unsightly white coating, powdery mildew disrupts the leaf's critical function. The fungus consumes the plant's sap and, more importantly, blocks sunlight from reaching the chlorophyll within the leaf cells. This process, known as photosynthesis, is how the plant creates its food. As the infection spreads and more leaf area turns white, the plant becomes starved of energy. You may notice the leaves beginning to curl, twist, or turn yellowish-brown before dropping prematurely, which weakens the plant and can impact its ability to bloom the following season.

Prune any overcrowded stems and avoid watering the leaves from above, as moisture encourages the fungus. Apply a fungicidal spray, such as a neem oil solution or a dedicated anti-fungal product, thoroughly coating the affected leaves. For environmental stress, gradually acclimate the plant to more sun or move it to a shadier spot. If pests are the issue, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to suffocate the insects.
