Red Flags is designed for 5 to 10 players, with each game lasting around 15-30 minutes. The number of cards you receive, or more specifically, the role you're assigned, is a crucial element of the game. But before we delve into the roles, let's set the stage.

Understanding Red Flags Roles

In Red Flags, players are divided into two teams: the Loyalists and the Traitors. The number of cards, or roles, you receive depends on the number of players. The goal is to have more Loyalists than Traitors, making the game dynamic and unpredictable.

Each player receives a role card at the start of the game, which they keep secret. The roles are as follows:

Loyalist

The Loyalist is the most common role in Red Flags. They are trying to complete missions while avoiding suspicion. The number of Loyalists increases with the player count, ensuring that the game remains balanced and exciting.

For example, in a 5-player game, 3 players will be Loyalists. In a 10-player game, 7 players will be Loyalists. This distribution ensures that the Traitors have a challenging task ahead, making the game more engaging.

Traitor

The Traitor's goal is to sabotage the Loyalists' missions and ultimately eliminate them. The number of Traitors remains constant at 1 or 2, depending on the player count, to maintain a sense of paranoia and uncertainty.

In a 5-player game, there will be 1 Traitor. In a 6-10 player game, there will be 2 Traitors. This fixed number of Traitors ensures that the Loyalists always have something to watch out for, adding tension to the game.

Missions and Sabotage

Throughout the game, players draw mission cards that require them to complete tasks or answer trivia questions. The number of cards in the mission deck varies depending on the player count, ensuring that each game offers a fresh and unpredictable experience.

For instance, a 5-player game might have a mission deck of 15-20 cards, while a 10-player game could have a deck of 25-30 cards. This variation in the number of mission cards keeps the game engaging and exciting, as players never know what challenges await them.

Mission Cards

Mission cards are drawn by all players simultaneously. They must complete the task or answer the question correctly to succeed. The number of successful missions required to win varies, but it's typically around half the number of players.

For example, in a 5-player game, 2 or 3 successful missions might be needed to win. In a 10-player game, 4 or 5 successful missions could be required. This scaling ensures that the game remains balanced and fair, regardless of the player count.

Sabotage Cards

Traitor players draw sabotage cards, which they can use to hinder the Loyalists' progress. The number of sabotage cards in the deck remains constant, regardless of the player count, to maintain a consistent level of challenge for the Loyalists.

For instance, the sabotage deck might contain 10-15 cards, with each Traitor drawing 2-3 cards per round. This fixed number of sabotage cards ensures that the Traitors always have tools at their disposal to disrupt the Loyalists' plans, making the game more suspenseful and engaging.

In Red Flags, the number of cards you receive, or more importantly, the role you're assigned, significantly impacts the gameplay experience. As a Loyalist, you'll need to complete missions while avoiding suspicion. As a Traitor, you'll need to sabotage the Loyalists' plans while blending in. The dynamic distribution of roles and cards ensures that each game of Red Flags is unique and exciting, keeping players engaged and eager for more.
