Transform Comforter into Quilt: Easy DIY Guide

Emma Jul 01, 2026

Transforming a comforter into a quilt is a wonderful way to upcycle a beloved bedding piece, giving it new life and purpose. Not only does this project allow you to personalize your sleeping space, but it also helps reduce textile waste. Let's dive into a step-by-step guide on how to achieve this, ensuring your new quilt is both functional and stylish.

Before we begin, gather your materials: your comforter, a measuring tape, scissors, fabric glue, a sewing machine with a universal needle, matching thread, and a rotary cutter with a self-healing mat (optional, for a more precise cut).

Preparing Your Comforter

First, decide on the size of your quilt. Standard sizes are Twin (69" x 90"), Full/Queen (69" x 87"), and King (75" x 87"). Measure your comforter and trim it to the desired size, ensuring you have enough fabric for the binding later on.

Next, determine the batting size. Batting should be slightly smaller than your comforter to prevent bulkiness. For a Twin or Full/Queen size, use a 63" x 84" batting. For a King, use a 71" x 84" batting. Cut your batting to size using your rotary cutter and mat for precision.

Quilting the Layers

Lay your comforter face down on a flat surface. Center the batting on top of the comforter, smoothing it out to remove any wrinkles. Place the backing fabric (right side facing down) on top of the batting, ensuring it's also centered and smooth.

Now, it's time to quilt the layers together. You can choose from various quilting patterns, such as straight lines, diagonal lines, or loops. Use your sewing machine to quilt the layers together, following your chosen pattern. Ensure you leave enough space around the edges for binding.

Adding the Binding

Cut 2.5" wide binding strips from the remaining comforter fabric. You'll need approximately 10-12 strips for a Twin or Full/Queen size, and 12-14 strips for a King. Sew the strips together end-to-end, creating one long strip.

Press the binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing each other. Starting at one corner, attach the binding to the front of your quilt, sewing along the raw edge. When you reach a corner, fold the binding up at a 45-degree angle, then fold it back down, creating a neat corner. Continue sewing the binding around the quilt, mitering the corners as you go.

Finishing Touches

Once the binding is sewn on, fold it over to the back of the quilt, enclosing the raw edge. Topstitch the binding in place, creating a clean, finished edge. If desired, add a hanging loop or label to personalize your quilt further.

Your comforter-turned-quilt is now ready to keep you cozy and stylish for years to come. Enjoy the warmth and comfort of your upcycled creation, knowing you've given new life to an old favorite.
