Displaying your national pride or supporting a cause by hoisting a flag is a rewarding experience. But knowing how to put a flag on a flagpole can be a challenge. This guide will walk you through the process, ensuring your flag is displayed correctly and safely.
Before you start, gather your materials: the flag, the flagpole, a halyard (the rope that raises and lowers the flag), a cleat (a device to secure the halyard), and any necessary hardware like screws or bolts.
Preparing the Flagpole
The first step is to ensure your flagpole is secure and ready for the flag. If it's a new pole, you'll need to install it. For an existing pole, check that it's sturdy and properly grounded.
If you're installing a new pole, dig a hole about 1/3 the depth of the pole's length. Fill the bottom with gravel for drainage, then place the pole in the hole. Fill around the pole with concrete, ensuring it's level and secure. Allow the concrete to set before proceeding.
Attaching the Cleat
A cleat is essential for securing the halyard and raising and lowering the flag. If your pole doesn't have one, attach it now. Position the cleat about 4-5 feet from the top of the pole. Mark the spot, then drill a hole for the cleat's screw or bolt.
Secure the cleat with the provided hardware. Ensure it's tight and won't wobble. The cleat should face the direction from which the wind usually blows to prevent the halyard from slipping out.
Threading the Halyard
The halyard is the rope that raises and lowers the flag. Thread it through the eyelet at the top of the flagpole. Leave enough rope to reach the ground and tie a knot at the end to prevent it from slipping back through the eyelet.
Wrap the halyard around the cleat, leaving a few feet of rope at the bottom for raising and lowering the flag. The halyard should be long enough to reach the ground when the flag is fully lowered.
Attaching the Flag
Now that your flagpole is prepared, it's time to attach the flag. Most flags have a sleeve at the top with a hole for the flagpole. If your flag doesn't have a sleeve, you can purchase a flagpole kit that includes one.
Insert the flagpole into the sleeve. If your flag has a grommet (a reinforced hole) at the top, you can also insert the pole through this. Ensure the flag is right-side out and the correct way up.
Raising the Flag
To raise the flag, grasp the halyard and pull it gently but firmly. The flag should slide up the pole easily. Continue pulling until the flag reaches the top of the pole. Tie the halyard around the cleat to secure it.
To ensure the flag is displayed correctly, the union (the blue section with white stars) should be at the peak of the pole and the flag should be unfurled. If it's windy, you may need to adjust the flag or secure it with a flagpole clip.
Lowering the Flag
When it's time to lower the flag, untie the halyard from the cleat. Gently pull the halyard to lower the flag. Once the flag is on the ground, fold it properly, ensuring the union is always on top and the folds are neat and even.
Store the flag in a dry place, preferably in a flag bag or box. If the flag is dirty or torn, clean or repair it before storing to preserve its condition.
