Although it is true an M54 will be out powered by the S5x stock (like 5HP), but if you manage to find a ZHP M54 and a decent tune, theres no reason an OEM+ M54 wont put out more power. M30 takes use of the stock transmission brace. The m50s, s50s or any other engine will require a new modified trans brace. Engine mounts are easy to source (Garagistic), and the wiring harness is the same harness as a 1988+ 325i.
All that being said. Have both the 1987 BMW E30 320i saloon and a 1987 Mercedes 2.3-16V Cosworth, give me the E30 any day. Less power, like half but a pleasure to drive, so fed up sapping ends, buying tyres and fuel.
