The Fundamentals of Frame Geometry

Before touching a single miter saw, understanding the geometry of the layout is essential. Mats are not just decorative; they are a critical component of the layout that provide visual breathing room and prevent the artwork from appearing trapped against the glass. The width of the mat border should be calculated to center the piece within the frame opening. Typically, the mat width on all sides should be equal, or adjusted slightly if the composition is off-center intentionally. This mat border effectively creates a secondary, inner frame that guides the eye and adds layers of depth to the presentation.
Calculating the Miter Cuts

Accuracy in calculation is non-negotiable for a professional finish. Unlike simply measuring the outer dimensions of the frame, you must account for the width of the molding itself. To determine the length of each side, you measure the mat opening, add the frame's width, and then factor in the miter angle. For a standard square frame, the process involves measuring one side, cutting the 45-degree angle, and using that piece to trace the length of the adjacent side to ensure a perfect fit without gaps.
Mitering for the Profile
Complex molding profiles can be tricky because the angle must cut through various edges to ensure the compound shape aligns seamlessly. When placing the molding on the saw, you must ensure the flat "back" of the profile is oriented correctly against the fence. If the profile is asymmetrical, the front and back design elements will not match up if the angle is reversed, ruining the continuity of the design.
