Embarking on the journey to master acrylic nails? Practicing on a practice hand is an essential step before working on clients. Here's a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to help you perfect your acrylic nail application technique. Let's dive in!
Gather Your Tools and Materials
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials. You'll need:
- Acrylic nail kit (including monomer, polymer, brushes, and tips)
- Nail file and buffer
- Cuticle pusher and orange wood stick
- Nail polish remover and cotton pads
- Hand lotion or cuticle oil
- Practice hand or mannequin hand
Prepare the Practice Hand
Start by cleaning the practice hand to remove any dirt or oils. Use a cotton pad soaked in nail polish remover to wipe the nails. This will also help to remove any previous nail art or polish.
Shape the Nails
Using a nail file and buffer, shape the nails to your desired length and form. Remember, practice makes perfect, so take your time to get the shape just right. Once you're satisfied with the shape, use a cuticle pusher to gently push back the cuticles.

Apply the Acrylic Tips
If you're using acrylic tips, apply them now. Use a small amount of monomer to attach the tip to the natural nail. Hold the tip in place for about 10-15 seconds to allow the monomer to set. Then, use a cuticle pusher to gently press the tip onto the nail, ensuring it's secure.
Apply the Acrylic
Now it's time to apply the acrylic. Dip the acrylic brush into the monomer, then into the polymer. Wipe off any excess on the side of the container. Starting at the cuticle, paint a thin layer of acrylic onto the nail, working your way down to the free edge. Cap the free edge with a small amount of acrylic to prevent lifting.
Allow the first layer to dry for about 2-3 minutes. Then, apply a second layer, focusing on building up the length and strength of the nail. Again, cap the free edge. Allow this layer to dry for about 5 minutes.

For a third and final layer, apply a thin layer of acrylic to the entire nail, focusing on smoothing out any ridges or imperfections. Cap the free edge once more and allow the nail to dry for about 10 minutes.
File and Buff the Nails
Once the acrylic is completely dry, use a nail file to gently file the surface of the nail. Start with a coarse file to remove any excess acrylic, then switch to a fine file to smooth out the surface. Use a buffer to further smooth and shine the nail.
Clean Up and Finish
Use a cuticle pusher to gently push back the cuticles. Apply hand lotion or cuticle oil to moisturize the skin. Your practice nails are now complete!

Practicing on a practice hand is an excellent way to improve your acrylic nail application skills. With each attempt, you'll gain confidence and perfect your technique. So, grab your tools, and let's get started!
