When searching for a quality pool table, the Olhausen name consistently appears at the top of the list for enthusiasts seeking a reliable and professional-grade setup. Understanding the cost of an Olhausen pool table is not a simple answer, as the price is determined by a specific combination of factors including size, model series, and the intricate details of the craftsmanship involved. This guide breaks down the investment required to bring an Olhausen table into your home or establishment, looking at the variables that influence the final number on the price tag.
The Olhausen Brand and Value Proposition
Olhausen is a distinguished brand in the billiards industry, known for producing tables that merge traditional European craftsmanship with modern performance standards. Their tables are often favored by serious players who prioritize a consistent and accurate playing surface over cheaper, mass-produced alternatives. The value of an Olhausen pool table lies in its durability; the use of premium slates and robust frames ensures that the table maintains its integrity and playability for decades, making it a long-term investment rather than a disposable purchase. This inherent build quality is the primary driver behind the initial cost, as it guarantees a stable platform where every shot reacts predictably.
Size Matters: The Primary Pricing Factor
The most significant variable affecting the price of an Olhausen pool table is its overall dimensions. Pool tables are not one-size-fits-all, and the space required dictates the price point. Generally, the larger the table, the higher the cost due to the increased amount of wood, slate, and labor required for construction. Potential buyers must consider not only the footprint of the table but also the required clearance around it for comfortable play. Ensuring you have the correct room dimensions is crucial before committing to a specific model, as a beautiful table that does not fit the room is not a practical investment.
Standard Dimension Categories
- 7-Foot Tables: Often referred to as "bar boxes," these are the most compact option. Ideal for dens, game rooms, or spaces where square footage is at a premium, they offer a fast-paced, action-packed style of play.
- 8-Foot Tables: Recognized as the standard tournament size, these tables provide the perfect balance between space requirements and playing area. They are the most popular choice for home game rooms, offering the professional feel of competition.
- 9-Foot Tables: The largest standard size, these are the preferred choice for dedicated billiards rooms. They offer the largest playing surface, allowing for advanced shot angles and a true test of a player's skill.
Construction Details and Material Quality
Beyond the dimensions, the specific construction materials dictate the price variation within the Olhausen lineup. The bed of the table, which is the playing surface, is typically made of either slate or a high-density synthetic composite. Slate tables are the industry standard for professional play, offering unmatched accuracy and stability, but they are significantly heavier and more expensive to ship and install. Olhausen also offers high-quality synthetic alternatives that provide excellent play at a lower price point, though they do not have the same level of rigidity as genuine slate.
Frame and Finish Options
The structural frame of the table, usually constructed from solid wood, and the exterior finish also contribute to the final cost. Olhausen provides a range of wood species and finish colors to match various interior decors. A hand-finished solid wood frame with a deep lacquer finish will command a premium price compared to a standard laminated option. Additionally, the choice of cloth—be it a speed cloth for tournament play or a slower, more controlled felt—can add to the total investment, as these components are selected for specific performance characteristics.
Comparing Models and Series
Olhausen organizes their products into distinct series, each targeting a different segment of the market. Entry-level or enthusiast series will be more budget-friendly, providing the core Olhausen quality and performance without some of the high-end customizations. Mid-range series offer a significant step up in materials and craftsmanship, featuring more intricate detailing and enhanced play features. Top-tier, high-performance series are designed for the serious competitor or dedicated hobbyist, incorporating the thicker slates and advanced leveling systems that ensure tournament-level accuracy.
Where to Purchase and Installation
Acquiring an Olhausen pool table typically involves working with specialized billiards retailers or large retailers with a dedicated billiards department. The pricing you see online or in a showroom is often the base price for the table itself. It is important to factor in additional costs that are frequently required. Professional delivery and installation are strongly recommended, as moving a heavy slate table through doorways and leveling it perfectly in its final position requires specialized equipment and expertise. These logistical costs are a necessary part of the overall budget to ensure the table performs as intended.
The Long-Term Financial Perspective
While the initial purchase of an Olhausen pool table represents a significant upfront cost, it is essential to view this as a long-term investment in your home and hobby. Unlike inexpensive, particle-board alternatives that may warp or wear out within a few years, a well-maintained Olhausen table is built to last for generations. Its value does not depreciate quickly; in fact, a high-quality table can often become a cherished family heirloom. The consistent, high-level play it provides ensures that the initial financial outlay is justified by years of entertainment and skill development.
