Ah! Maybe you're going to do more on this, but I see that you put in the features list above 'Train your crew'. Methinks you need to do something more on that because am I right in thinking that as of version 0.50.03 the only thing it affects is some of the armour?

EDIT: I'll be quiet...just looked at your blog

What game are you working on? Give me a link and I'll drop it on my blog.

I'm sure it's a great game, but even on the first menu it was really jerky for me. I'm on quite an old computer but the menu didn't look like it would use a lot of fillrate or vertices.
It would be good if you could get a list of controls from in the game !
Also, after the aliens came on at the start (couldn't kill them because too jerky) I crashed into an asteroid and about 3 secs later the game just disappeared. No error message. Maybe a log would be cool to help you with those sort of bugs.

My computer config is:
Pentium 800MHz 256MB RAM
but new NVidia GeForce FX 5200
Windows 2000 Professional
DirectX 9.0c

I know I can't blame you for your cool game not working on my computer, I know its about 7 years old and I need a new one :-)

BTW: did you use JPEG compression on the menu images in the Arms Dealer bit of the space station?

My guess you had problems because of windows 2000, try win 98. 2000 is is not game friendly, while 98 is very stable for games.

I don't think that's the problem for a few reasons. First off, one of the boxes I run on is Win2K, and it seems to work fine (actually I've never tested it on '98, so I'm not completely sure it will even run on it). Also Dr.G mentioned later that he had installed his DirectX SDK in debug mode and when he re-installed it in release mode it worked fine. I haven't attempted to trouble shoot this bug yet (procrastination). I really have no excuse other than I've been working on more interesting problems. Thanks for the thought though, I appreciate it .

Oh and if anyone has any more feedback or finds more bugs (there are still many) I have a forum up on the Epoch Star web site

Thanks guys

In game I only saw the gui, the actual game screen was black.

Intel 3.4ghz
1gb ram
nvidia 6600 TD 256mb (WinFast PX6600 TD)
All of this is sitting on a PCIE bus and using the latest drivers etc.

If you want to contact me to do testing, contact me by email/aim/icq. Info in my profile.

I think I did something that caused the game to not run correctly on nvidia cards. I'm not sure what exactly, but in the past few weeks I've had several complaints about the game not running on nvidia cards. Sorry, I'll try to get it fixed as soon as I can.

Thanks for letting me know.

Well I only really use Quake and my game...but you said you used lots of pixel shaders...Quake III Arena doesn't use any so maybe that's why it was fast. Now I have a theory that the debug runtime inexplicitly slows down pixel shaders...maybe no optimization even if the flags are set to optimize?

That's an interesting theory. I only use one pixel shader, and my next version will have an options checkbox to turn it on and off. I'm going to have it default to off.

*I just realized this is a response to a really old post... sorry about that*

I'm running a
1.87 GHZ AMD
1 Gig RAM
256 meg GeforceFX 5600

The problem:
Upon start-up it crashes to desktop. I get a background of stars and crosshairs on my screen for a very brief moement. Then I'm back to my desktop.

When did you download the game? I just put a new version out last night that I hoped would fix that problem. I don't have the issue on any of my cards, so it's difficult to troubleshoot.

Thanks

I just played the game for a couple of hours and I love it! The combination of RPG and space shooting is very cool. The beginning of the story seems very interesting too. It might be nice there were a bit more RPG elements, but the game is alredy great. Keep up the great work!

Hey thanks!

What RPG elements would you recommend adding?

User Rating: 1209   |  Rate This User    Send Private MessageView ProfileReport this Post to a Moderator

Hmm... Well it's easy for me to say "a bit more RPG elements" , but actually saying what RPG elements is much harder. But because too many people just say something vague like that and claim to have sayed something actually useful, I'll try. Remember, that I am just a normal person so if I'll try to come up with something on purpose, the idea will propably be very stupid. But you aked for it so here it comes:

Some kind of weapon experience thing. For example if you use different beams for long enough, you gain beam weapon experience or something. And then you will be able to use beam weapons better than other weapons. Perhaps even attack entirely differently with them.

Like I said, it is propably a useless idea, but I just didn't want to remain behind a cowardly veil of vagueness.

I really like the game. Is the story finished? I'd hate to play it for 300 hours, fly to a star system waiting for an Epic End Battle and then see a text: "Sorry, I'm kinda still working on the end." :)

I had actually thought about giving it more specific skills, but for simplicity I settled for a system that is more Diablo like. I would like to increase the number of skills, but I'll have to save that for Epoch Star 2.

The story is finished, but I only have ACT1 in the game now. ACT2 and AC3 are not in the version I've got out there now. I'm trying to make them clean before I put them out.

Thanks for playing.

I've been writing the game for almost 3 years... but I've re-written it a few times. I re-wrote the engine about a year and a half ago... and this summer I redid all the art work.

This is the first video game I started, but I've since written 2 freeware games, Asteroid ES and Alien Invaders Attack.

Definitely a fun game. I got really into it, but then I started kicking the Goth's butts and it just randomly put up the Options UI and crashed. Urg, I just realized that that means I died. T_T

I've seen this happening, and I have a theory... I don't think that the game is crashing, but when you die, I bring up the options menu. I've noticed that when people are in a heavy fire fight they tend to click a lot to fire their weapon. What I've seen people do is click the exit button on the options menu without realizing it, and not really understanding what happened. One minute they are playing the game, and the next it is closed so they assume it crashed. I'm trying to think of a good way to keep this from happening.

Thanks for your input,
Rick

Awesome Game: love the music, graphics, sounds, etc. But for some reason the mouse cursor doesn't show up on my computer: it's pretty new, only 3 months or so. Of course, without the cursor you can't do much. I had to guess where it was to start a game. But it looks really awesome!

I've had a lot of complaints about this... I'm still not sure what the problem is. Try downloading the most recent drivers for you video card to see if that helps. I can't find a machine that has the problem, so I haven't been able to figure out what is causing it. Is there any chance you could post your system's specs?

Thanks,
Rick

I'm off to Slamdance where my game Epoch Star is a finalist in their game competition.

Wish me luck,
Rick
