When Do You Need a Passport?

ALL U.S. citizens need a passport to travel outside of the country by air.

You should have a U.S. passport if you are thinking of taking a trip abroad, or if you have a job that may require international travel.

When do you need a passport?

Passports are required to leave the country by air. As your job may include international travel, it is recommended that you begin the passport application process now. This will help prevent any travel delays in the future.

You will need to submit proof of U.S. citizenship with your application.

A birth certificate is an example of primary citizenship evidence.

In addition to the original document, you will also need to provide a photocopy of the citizenship evidence.

Passport Form

To apply for a passport for the first time, you will need to complete a DS-11 form.

You can find this form at travel.state.gov

The form can be completed using the site’s form filler, or you can print it and complete it by hand.
