Bmw E46 Engine Rattling Noise At Idle

Car works perfectly fine outside of the noise. When i engage the clutch in neutral it slightly slows down the. i have a rattle coming from my engine bay when my car idles.
i can mainly hear it when i'm outside the car, not inside. i can also clearly hear it in drive-through's or when i'm next to a wall because the noise resonates off the surface. it's only at idle and sounds like a metal rattle sound.

Usually does it when the rpm's jump up at a downshift, or right before and upshift. Doesn't seem to do it outside of the 2000-3000 range. I was poking around with a stethoscope but it can't seem to pin point it.
I only have one fault with my E46 316i (N42 engine), but it's been driving me mad for almost a year now. On startup the engine is very quiet, but once the emissions pump thingy stops, I get a horrible tapping noise from the engine. It sounds like a knackered tappet, but the noise stops.
