Four ran with six-cylinder engines and two used the 4.9-liter M5 S62 V8s, each of them combined with specially developed carbon fiber bodywork. This past weekend, 2,345 miles west, I got to see another new BMW exhibit open: The Ultimate Racing Machine: 50 Years of the BMW 3 Series in Motorsports at the Petersen Automotive Museum.

And it, too, is incredible. The E30M3 and E36M3 welcoming committee lets you know you're in the right place. It undoubtedly did more for the fame of the real M3 GTR.

The fictional version of the M3 GTR from that game captured imaginations - and BMW even recreated the real car in that livery in recent museum displays. Today, seeing a genuine M3 GTR (street or race) in action is like glimpsing a unicorn. One of just three BMW M3 GTR road cars stops by the Petersen Automotive Museum for a video tour giving us a closer look at the ultimate E46.
