If your bike has a 37:11 final drive (3.36:1), the engine turns about 4000 rpm at 60 mph, not 5000 rpm. Perhaps your tach is inaccurate? I have found 4000 rpm to be the sweet spot on every post 1970 boxer I have owned. mph = rpm / (gearbox ratio X final drive ratio) X wheel diameter* / 1056 mph = 4000 / (1.5 X 3.36) X 81.68 / 1056 = 61.4 mph * wheel diameter = 81.68 inches for 400 X 18.
Final Drive Example performed on a 1985 R80 RT This video applies to 85+ Classic MONOLEVER BMW Airheads Also, applies to R80 G/S & R80 ST. Would a final drive from a R80 with matching rear wheel not be a viable replacement? With independent wheelbuilders out there seems as though one could even lace up a rim and still end up money ahead given what ive seen G/S wheels go for. Quite a lot of this mechanical work would apply to 1981 and on airheads. This tutorial is using the former 1985 R80 RT that William converted to a 1985 R80 S variant in our last video series. Re: R80/7 Final Drive Breather by Rob Frankham Mon Feb 07, 2022 9:51 am I believe it ios an interference fit and the only practical way to remove it without damage would be to dismantle the drive and drive it out from inside. I would go with (or rather have gone with) the idea of cleaning it up and applying a paint finish. The next step in my custom build.
