The BMW E31 is the first generation of the BMW 8 Series. It is a grand tourer built by BMW from 1990 to 1999 as a 2-door coupé, powered by either a V8 or V12 engine. Whilst it did supplant the original E24 based 6 Series in 1990, it was not a direct successor, but a new model class with a substantially higher price and performance than the 6 Series.

In the early 1990s, BMW's M division created a high-performance version of the E31 8 Series that was allegedly capable of shaming the era's fastest supercars. The S70/2 in the M8 was developed as the ultimate version of BMW's V12. Though it shared the same basic block design, the M8's engine featured custom cylinder heads and internals that turned the smooth CSi engine into a quad-cam, dry-sump, 640hp thoroughbred.

The concept of the M8 came from a desire to break new ground. The Bavarian automaker had already made its mark by this time thanks to exceptional models like the E30 M3 and E34 M5 setting high. So this particular engine inspired the powerplant in the E31 BMW M8.

Yet instead of the 549 horsepower, the E31 M8 received 640 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque from the 6.0 liter V12. Long before the current BMW M8 came into existence, the car manufacturer developed a one-off, high. This is the history of the BMW E31 8-series, including a special M8 model that lacked any M badging.

The 850CSi received the same M-treatment as the E36 M3. ENGINE / TRANSMISSION At the heart of the M8 was an extraordinary super high performance iteration of BMW's Type M70 five-litre V12. Dubbed S70, it was the first in a series of S70 engines that went on to power the McLaren F1 (S70/2) and the BMW V12 LM / LMR racing cars (S70/3).

The standard 850i engine was equipped with single overhead camshafts, two valves per cylinder and an 8.8:1.
