When you mix turquoise and dark blue, the result is a deep, complex color that sits gracefully between the two on the color wheel. The outcome is a rich, sophisticated hue that combines the calming clarity of cyan with the depth of navy, creating a shade that feels both grounded and serene. Depending on the proportions used, this blend can appear as a refined deep teal or a dark, maritime blue, making it a flexible choice for design and artistic applications.
The Resulting Color: Deep Teal and Muted Navy
The specific shade you achieve depends heavily on the ratio of turquoise to dark blue. Equal parts create a balanced, deep teal that retains the greenish undertones of the turquoise while significantly reducing its brightness. If you add more dark blue, the mixture shifts toward a muted navy or indigo, where the green notes fade and the cool, somber characteristics of the blue dominate the final color.
Understanding the Undertones
Turquoise usually carries subtle green or cyan undertones, while dark blue often leans toward indigo or a cool black base. When combined, the green from the turquoise tempers the intensity of the dark blue, preventing the mix from looking flat or muddy. The result is a color with depth and nuance, offering a natural, organic feel that is difficult to achieve with a single pigment. This interaction of undertones is what gives the mixture its unique character and visual interest.

Psychology and Mood
Color psychology plays a vital role in how this mixture is perceived. The inherent calm of blue merged with the refreshing vitality of turquoise creates a color that is both soothing and invigorating. It can inspire feelings of trust, wisdom, and introspection, making it a powerful choice for environments intended for relaxation or focused work. This blend avoids the coldness of pure blue, instead offering a warm, complex, and grounded energy.
When working with pigments, paints, or digital color pickers, testing the mixture on a neutral surface is essential to observe how the two colors interact in your specific medium. Lighting conditions can dramatically alter the perception of the resulting dark teal or navy shade, so always evaluate the color in the intended environment. Mastering this combination allows for greater control over the final aesthetic and ensures the desired emotional impact is achieved.
