Making Music
Whether we recognize it or not, music is tremendously important part of our lives. Listening to music can be a very personal experience, but it can also bring people together as a community. Music extends beyond the sounds made by instruments and singers - our speech and language is based on a foundation of music.
There's much more to music than meets the ears, though. The science and mathematics of music can reveal to us what makes some sounds beautiful and other disturbing. Most amazing of all is that our understanding of music provides us with profound insights into how our universe works - from the farthest reaches of space to the smallest building blocks of nature.
In this unit, we will work to understand the mathematical and scientific roots of music, the technology of the modern music industry, and the larger roles that music plays in society.
