Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) scanners have revolutionized inventory management, supply chain tracking, and asset monitoring across various industries. But how do these devices work? What is RFID?

An RFID system comprises three main components:

1. Emitting Radio Waves

An RFID scanner initiates communication by emitting low-power radio waves via its antenna. These waves are directed towards the area where tags are expected to be present. The frequency of these waves can vary, with the most common being Low Frequency (LF), High Frequency (HF), Ultra-High Frequency (UHF), and Active RFID.

2. Activating the Tag

When a tag enters the scanner's read range, it absorbs the radio waves. This absorbed energy powers the tag's microchip, activating it. The tag then reflects some of the received energy back to the reader, along with its stored data.

3. Reading and Decoding Data

The scanner's antenna receives the reflected signal, which is then decoded by the reader's software. The decoded data is sent to the connected computer system, where it's processed and used for various applications, such as tracking inventory levels or monitoring asset locations.
