Bioplastics are a form of plastic that can be made from renewable bio-based resources. Many bioplastic materials are designed to be biodegradable, and some are designed to be compostable . These properties are important for the functionality of the end product and for its disposal.
Biobased, biodegradable and compostable plastics

Biodegradable and compostable plastics may be made from biological resources or fossil raw materials. These plastics should be used when it is not possible to reduce, reuse or recycle, in line with the circular economy and waste hierarchy principles.
Except for certain bioplastics , particularly PLA, PHA, bio -PE, and bio -PET, as well as non- or partially bio-based biodegradable plastics , particularly PBAT, PBS, and starch-polymer blends, other bioplastics and biodegradable plastics have not been successfully commercialized.

Overview of Bio-Based Bioplastics For Compostable Plastics

The term bioplastic can be used to refer to plastics that are bio-based , biodegradable, or both. Examples of plastics that are both bio-based and biodegradable include poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB), polyglycolic acid (PGA), and polylactic acid (PLA).
As of now, materials composed of biodegradable plastics , such as PLA, PHA, starch blends, and others, account for over 52.1% of the global capacity for producing bioplastics , while over 47.9% is made up of biobased /non-biodegradable plastics (Fig. 1).
These are plastics that are made fully, or partly, from biomass*. Most of these plastics are designed to be composted in an industrial composting facility and are biodegradable. Some are also able to be composted in home compost systems.
Bio-based plastics are wholly or partly derived from biomass feedstock, which is renewable when it can be continually replenished (EN 16575). Biodegradable plastics can be broken down into water, naturally occurring gas and biomass by microorganisms (bacteria or fungi).
