Well we got to talking about the differences between the 20R, 22R and the 22RE (besides the fuel injection and the carburetor). The 20R head on an early 22R only raises the CR a little bit, not like the 20R head on a late style 22R, which bumps it to ~10.5, iirc, but it requires extensive machining to make it work. 20R head flows better.

as mentioned above a 20R head is a direct swap to the 22r up to /84 only. you will have to use the 20intake. This simple swap will increase compression 1.0.

make sure the 20r has the power steering bosses, and manual fuel pump opening. most of the cars 20r's didnt have these, 4x4's did. If I remember correctly the 20R manifold has smoother turns from carb to head and the 22R's runner are more square.

The valve covers are the same so the 22R sticker doesn't mean anything. I don't have a pic to show you but if you posted a pic of the intake manifold I think I could tell you if it was a 20R or 22R. The manifold's do not interchange.
