Does anyone know what these oils actually are? I need G5 for front axle and G4 for rear axle. OE is about $60 for 1/2 litre at the dealer. Lots of companies list an equivalent for the G4, but the G5 seems to be much less common.
BMW switched the front diff requirement to G5 from G2 a few years ago for most (if not all) of the X. I'm looking at R&R the front & Rear Differential fluid in our '15 X5, non-adaptive. BMW calls out "BMW G2 Hypoid Differential Fluid (500mL) - Genuine BMW 83222413511" for the Front Diff, which is a 75W85 gear oil that costs $50-$60 per.5 liters (approx $100/qt) & BMW G3 Hypoid Differential.

BMW Transmission & Differential Oil This page covers fluid information and recommendations for BMW manual and automatic transmissions, rear differentials, and front differentials on xDrive models. Parts specialist febi has added to its specialist fluids range with the introduction of a new gear oil aimed especially at BMW applications. febi 184247, Gear Oil SAE 70W-80 (GL-5) is a rear axle oil based on special low.
When I go to the BMW Tech site & FCPEuro, they specify the following: Front Differential with a G2 fluid, which is a GL5 75W85 @ $59.49/.5 liter Rear Differential with a G3 fluid, which is a GL5 70W80 @ $80.49/.5 liter Both take a little over.5 liter, so I would need to buy 2x.5 liters of each, which is $280 just in gear oil. Driveline Fluids and Alternitives Heck the OEM G5 only says for Rear Diff. The screenshots i included and the BMW parts confirmation seem to indicate its the front as well though.
1) What and how much of the fluids do i actually need for this service (extra) 2) Is the Febi BMW GL. I'm looking for an alternative to BMW G3 Hypoid axle fluid used in the rear diff of newer BMW vehicles. It appears to be a 70w-80 GL-5.
The genuine BMW stuff is about $50 per HALF liter. Part number 83222413512 I found MOPAR Synthetic Axle Fluid (70w-80 GL-5, part number 68227765-AB) Think.
