Kapil Dev Ramlal Nikhanj (born 6 January 1959) is a former world-renowned Indian cricketer and current coach. He was one of the greatest all-rounders to have ever played the game and the greatest fast bowler India has ever produced. He captained the Indian cricket team that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup. He was also India's national cricket coach for 10 months between October 1999 and August 2000.

Biography

Kapil dev hometown in Chandigarh, India. He studied at D.A.V. School in Chandigarh and graduated from Desh Prem Azad College of Commerce in Delhi. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in October 1978 and went on to become India's leading wicket-taker with 434 Test wickets. He was named the Indian Cricketer of the Year in 1983 and is one of only two players to have taken more than 400 wickets and scored more than 5,000 runs in Test cricket.

Statistics

Kapil Dev took 434 Test wickets and 253 One Day International (ODI) wickets. His Test bowling average was 29.64 and his ODI bowling average was 27.45. He scored 5,248 runs in Tests and 3,783 runs in ODIs. His highest Test score was 163 and his highest ODI score was 175 not out.

Benchmarks

Kapil Dev's greatest achievement was captaining India to victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, where India defeated the powerful West Indies side. He is one of only two players to take more than 400 wickets and score more than 5,000 runs in Test cricket, the other being Sir Richard Hadlee. He is also the first and only Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. He is the only Indian fast bowler to have taken more than 400 wickets in Tests and the only Indian player to have taken more than 250 wickets in ODIs. He is the first player to take four wickets in four consecutive balls in ODIs.
