Success hinges on meticulous measurement, careful preparation of the rough opening, and a methodical approach to leveling and shimming.
Understanding the Prehung Unit
A prehung bathroom door consists of the door itself, connected to a rectangular wooden frame, or jamb, with heavy-duty hinges already installed. This configuration is designed to sit directly into the rough opening in the wall, which is intentionally built larger than the finished door size. The primary advantage of this design is that it saves significant time and reduces the complexity of the installation, as you do not need to mortise hinges or perfectly align separate components. However, the unit is only as good as its installation; if the frame is not perfectly vertical and level, the door will not close properly, creating gaps or binding in the latch system.
Measuring and Preparation
Before removing any packaging, you must verify that the new door matches the existing infrastructure. Measure the width and height of the existing rough opening, and then compare these dimensions to the specifications on the prehung unit's packaging. A standard prehung unit usually sits 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch smaller in both width and height than the rough opening to allow for adjustment and finishing materials. You will also need to gather specific tools, including a pry bar, a reciprocating saw or hammer, a level, wooden shims, a drill, and construction screws. Protective gear such as safety glasses and work gloves is essential, as you will be dealing with old materials and sharp packaging components.
Removing the Old Door
Carefully remove the trim surrounding the existing door using the pry bar, taking care not to damage the drywall or baseboards. Once the casing is free, unscrew the old prehung unit from the jamb brackets inside the wall. Gently tilt the unit out of the opening, removing any old weatherstripping or insulation that might be lodged in the frame. Inspect the rough opening for any rot, insect damage, or structural issues; these must be addressed before the new unit is placed, as installing a door on compromised framing will lead to premature failure.
Fitting the New Unit
With the rough opening cleared, slide the new prehung door into place. Before securing it, check the width of the opening and compare it to the width of the door jamb. Use shims placed between the jamb and the rough opening to gently nudge the frame into the correct position. Leveling and Securing
