Colored Zebra Danio

All zebra danios have white stripes with black borders and different colored strips between these stripes - such as blue. Neon versions of the zebra danio, called GloFish danios, are also available in several colors: Sunburst Orange, Galactic Purple, Starfire Red, Electric Green, and Cosmic Blue. In the past, the leopard danio was considered a different species, but genetic studies have proven that it is merely a spotted variation of Danio rerio.

A brightly colored variety of zebra danio is now available called GloFish. These fish have had fluorescent pigment introduced into their DNA that makes them brightly colored. Other common names this species is known by include Zebrafish, Striped Danio, and Zebra Fish.

There are dozens of variations of this Danio, with the Albino Zebra Danio being a naturally occuring color morph. Many varieties and color morphs, including the Albino, Longfin, Golden, Sandy, and Leapard Zebra Danios, are bred in captivity today. The species has been selectively bred to produce several color varieties including Longfin Zebra Danios with extended finnage, Leopard Danios with spotted rather than striped patterns (now recognized as the same species), and GloFish fluorescent varieties genetically modified to display bright colors under certain lighting. Danio Glofish is a genetically modified zebra danio that comes in several different fluorescent neon colors such as red, green, orange, blue and purple.They were genetically modified with the purpose to detect environmental pollution. Five to seven horizontal stripes run from behind their gills all the way through their tail fin, alternating between dark blue or black and shimmering silver-gold. The stripes continue onto their anal fin, creating a cohesive pattern that makes them unmistakable. Zebra Danios come in several color variants, including the classic striped version, golden, blue, longfin, wild type, pearl, and albino.
