Student Teaching Application - CTC Header Image

Student Teaching Applications must be submitted ONE semester PRIOR to the intended Student Teaching semester

Important Notice Regarding Student Teaching

Due to the fluid situation of the Covid-19 pandemic and schools/districts changing their requirements regarding non-essential personnel on campus, vaccination, testing, etc., we are facing challenges that may affect our student teaching placements. The School of Education will continue to use all reasonable efforts to place our student teachers but you should know that we cannot guarantee placement and some placements may be subject to change, postponement or cancellation due to governmental and school regulations and policies. Also, while we are not requiring our students to be vaccinated, we are finding that there are fewer challenges for placing student teachers who are vaccinated. As a result, if you are willing to be vaccinated and just have not done so, you may want to consider receiving the vaccine as soon as feasible.

Please indicate which option below describes your situation the best:

IMPORTANT: If you need to save and return to the form at a later time, you may do so at any point by scrolling to the bottom of the page and selecting the "Save and Resume Later" button.

Program & Enrollment

Are you an international student?*
What is your current enrollment status?*
Are you planning to student teach while enrolled as an undergraduate student, or transition to the graduate program and student teach as a graduate student?

Most students will student teach as graduate students. If you are currently an undergrad and plan to take Student Teaching at the Graduate Level (it is uncommon to do otherwise), you must submit a Transitioning Graduate Application. In order to gain access to the Transitioning Graduate Application, please fill out the 'SOE Transition Inquiry Form'.

Delay in submitting the 'SOE Transition Inquiry Form' could result in not completing Student Teaching in your desired semester.

Please indicate your understanding of the statement above by checking both boxes below:*
Have you already submitted a "Transitioning Graduate Application" to the School of Education?*
Please indicate which graduate program you are currently enrolled in:

You must be officially enrolled at Biola as either a graduate or undergraduate student in order to student teach through this program. If you are planning to readmit/enroll at Biola and have not yet filled out the Admissions Readmit Application, please contact Mackenzie Ahmadinia <mackenzie.ahmadinia@biola.edu> to make arrangements to do so. Please note that you will need to submit the form to be readmitted PRIOR TO finishing the Student Teaching Application.

What were you when you were last enrolled?

Which credential are you aiming for?*
Do you intend to complete the Student Teaching Seminar IN-PERSON or ONLINE?*
Have you already officially applied to be in the online program?

You must be officially enrolled at Biola as an online major student in order to be in the online Student Teaching Seminar. If you wish to be in the online Student Teaching Seminar and are not sure about your online major status, please STOP and contact the Field Placement Coordinator at <field.placement@biola.edu> about your online major status before continuing this application.

Special Accommodations

Do you need any special accommodation for accessibility?
Please contact the Field Placement Coordinator directly at field.placement@biola.edu if you have questions about accessibility accommodations..
Seeking permission to take coursework along with Student Teaching*
Maximum of 3 units with director's approval
Employment during Student Teaching Semester*

Placement Information

Type of Student Teaching*

I am pursuing a job (or currently hold a full-time teaching job in a California accredited school) and do NOT request a traditional student teaching assignment. I understand proof of employment, a future summer student teaching placement, professor approval, and possibly SEED 518 or SEED 523 may be required for approval to student teach under contract at my current job.

COVID Vaccination Status

While Biola University does not require COVID vaccination for student teaching eligibility, many local school districts are currently requiring full COVID vaccination; this information is requested so that unvaccinated students can be placed with districts that are accommodating of their vaccination status. You may opt to not disclose your vaccination status if you prefer, but please know that if you are unvaccinated, choose not to disclose your status, and are unknowingly placed in a district requiring full vaccination, the district will not allow you to proceed with student teaching and we will need to start over from scratch in finding a placement for you, most likely after all other placements in neighboring districts have already been filled. We would not be able to guarantee a placement that starts on-time or at all, at that point.

What is your current COVID-19 vaccination status?
Overseas Student Teaching for Phase II*
Are you an Early Childhood Education concentration student? *
Do you want a kindergarten placement?*
ECE students please note: by indicating “yes” to this question, you will be placed in Kindergarten for Phase II. By checking no, this means you do NOT wish to be placed in Kindergarten during your student teaching experience and you may NOT be eligible for the Child Development Permit Level III.
Would you prefer a Phase II placement in a Christian school?*

Geographical Placement Guidelines

The School of Education makes every possible effort to place Biola student teachers within a 30-minute radius of Biola or their residential address (online program only), but in cases of extreme need, placements may fall outside of a 30-minute radius of those desired locations.

If you have a preference of school districts for your student teaching placements, please list up to three down below (in order of preference).  Listing your preferences does not guarantee placement in any of these districts. If you have a specific Master teacher you would like to request, include that as well.

In order to avoid a conflict of interest, placement in a district where a relative is present / employed is not allowed.

Do you have a preference of school district for your student teaching placement(s)?*
Do you have a preference of a master teacher for your student teaching placement(s)?*
Have you already confirmed with your preferred master teacher that s/he is interested in hosting you for student teaching?*

IMPORTANT!

Please remember that confirmation from the teacher or even site administration at a school is a great start, but it is not sufficient to guarantee the placement. The Field Placement Coordinator must reach out to all involved parties, including the district, to confirm the placement. DO NOT REACH OUT TO THE DISTRICT YOURSELF TO TRY TO MAKE THE PLACEMENT HAPPEN; THIS CAN DAMAGE BIOLA'S PARTNERSHIPS WITH VARIOUS SCHOOL AND DISTRICT PARTNERS. If you have questions about the status of your placement, reach out to the Field Placement Coordinator, not the school or district, at <field.placement@biola.edu>.

The Field Placement Coordinator will reach out to school and district partners on your behalf to make arrangements for your placement, taking into account as much as possible the preferences you have shared above. Please remember that we cannot guarantee that you will receive your preferred placement, though we will try our best. Thank you for your patience with the process.

If you have not yet confirmed with the potential master teacher that they would be interested in hosting you, that is not a problem. The Field Placement Coordinator will reach out to school and district partners on your behalf to make arrangements for your placement, taking into account as much as possible the preferences you have shared above. Please remember that we cannot guarantee that you will receive your preferred placement, though we will try our best. DO NOT REACH OUT TO THE DISTRICT YOURSELF TO TRY TO MAKE THE PLACEMENT HAPPEN; THIS CAN DAMAGE BIOLA'S PARTNERSHIPS WITH VARIOUS SCHOOL AND DISTRICT PARTNERS.

If at any point you have questions about the status of your placement, reach out to the Field Placement Coordinator, not the school or district, at <field.placement@biola.edu>.Thank you for your patience with the process.

Requirements and Document Uploads

Passage of CalTPA

As of June 1, 2020, the CTC no longer accepts the former CalTPA 1, 2, 3, and 4 assessments. The CTC now requires passage of CalTPA Cycle I and Cycle II assessments prior to credentialing. Students MUST pass Cycle I prior to entering into student teaching. This can be done in conjunction with the Curriculum course, or by enrolling in a 1- or 2-unit course with fieldwork the semester prior to student teaching (see your academic advisor for more details).

All students will complete Cycle II during student teaching with support from the Student Teaching Seminar.

STOP!

Thank you for your interest in the Student Teaching Program at Biola. Without already having passed CalTPA Cycle I OR a current status of formally working on Cycle I, we cannot process your application at this time. You will need to delay your student teaching for an additional semester at a minimum.

Biola offers course(s) in preparation for completing CalTPA Cycle I.  Our CalTPA Coordinator will reach out to you after you have filled out the CalTPA Support Request.

TB Clearance

Please be reminded that the California Law requires the Tuberculosis Risk Assessment Questionnaire OR negative Tuberculosis (TB) Test, administered by a health care provider and done within the last 4 years, prior to working with school students. If you do not know how to obtain your TB Documentation, please click here for instructions.

You are required to submit your signed Risk Assessment Questionnaire from your health care provider or negative TB test result in order to receive your Student Teaching placement. If you do not have TB documentation handy, and you are eligible to use a TB Risk Assessment in lieu of a TB test  (see the link above for more information), it is highly recommended that you use the TB Risk Assessment pathway to meet this requirement; you can easily get these done free at the Health Center with an appointment. If you have done your TB documentation in the past but cannot find it right now, just get another TB Risk Assessment done (unless you are not eligible to do so; see the link above for more information).

If you prefer to turn in results from a TB test, please follow these guidelines:

  • The documentation you provide must show your name, the kind of TB test that was performed, the date of service, the healthcare provider/clinic's name, and the results (negative).
  • Please do not send screenshots of online health portal results or medical records unless they meet all of the requirements in the first bullet point.
  • Please do not send your immunization records unless they meet all of the requirements in the first bullet point.

Please upload a copy of your TB documentation below.*
