Create a Stylish and Functional Planter Bench: A Step-by-Step Guide
Transform your outdoor space into a lush oasis with a DIY planter bench. Not only does it provide a cozy seating area, but it also adds a touch of greenery to your patio, balcony, or garden. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to build a planter bench that's both stylish and functional.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. Here's a list to help you get started:
- 2x4 pressure-treated lumber (for the frame)
- 1x6 pressure-treated lumber (for the slats and bench top)
- 2x2 pressure-treated lumber (for the legs)
- 2.5" exterior wood screws
- 1.25" exterior wood screws
- Exterior wood glue
- Stainless steel or galvanized hardware (for the planter boxes)
- Cedar or redwood planks (for the planter boxes, optional)
- Circular saw
- Drill and driver bits
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
- Work gloves
- Sandpaper (120-grit)
- Exterior wood sealant (optional)
Design Your Planner Bench
Before you start cutting, decide on the size and style of your planter bench. A standard bench is about 5 feet long and 18 inches deep, with a height of 18 inches. You can adjust these measurements to fit your space and preferences. Sketch out your design, including the dimensions and any decorative elements you'd like to incorporate.

Create the Frame
Start by building the frame of your bench. Cut two 2x4s to the desired length of your bench (e.g., 60 inches) and two more 2x4s to the desired depth (e.g., 18 inches). These will serve as the top and bottom rails of your bench frame.
Using your 2.5" exterior wood screws, attach the top and bottom rails together, creating a rectangle. Ensure the corners are square by measuring the diagonal from corner to corner – it should be equal on both sides.
Add the Legs
Cut four 2x2s to the desired height of your bench (e.g., 18 inches). These will serve as the legs. Attach two legs to the inside of each end of the frame, using exterior wood glue and 2.5" screws. Make sure the legs are perpendicular to the frame and evenly spaced.

Create the Bench Top
Cut eight 1x6s to the desired depth of your bench (e.g., 18 inches) and four 1x6s to the desired length (e.g., 60 inches). These will serve as the slats and supports for the bench top.
Attach the four long 1x6s to the top of the frame, using exterior wood glue and 1.25" screws. Ensure they are evenly spaced and flush with the top of the frame. Then, attach the eight short 1x6s to the top of the long supports, creating a grid pattern. This will provide a sturdy surface for sitting and support for the planter boxes.
Build the Planter Boxes
If you're using cedar or redwood planks for your planter boxes, cut them to the desired dimensions (e.g., 18 inches deep, 12 inches wide, and 6 inches high). Assemble the boxes using exterior wood glue and 1.25" screws. Ensure the bottom of the boxes is slatted to allow for drainage.
Alternatively, you can use hardware cloth or plastic liners to create the planter boxes. Attach the hardware or liner to the inside of the bench frame using stainless steel or galvanized hardware.
Attach the Planter Boxes
Position the planter boxes on top of the bench top, ensuring they are centered and evenly spaced. Attach them to the bench using exterior wood screws or hardware, depending on the material you've chosen.
Finish and Protect Your Planner Bench
Sand any rough edges or surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper. If desired, apply an exterior wood sealant to protect your bench from the elements. Allow the sealant to dry completely before using your new planter bench.
Plant Your Greenery
Now that your planter bench is complete, it's time to add the finishing touch – the plants! Choose plants that thrive in your climate and complement your outdoor space. Fill the planter boxes with high-quality potting soil and arrange your plants accordingly. Water them well and enjoy your new greenery-filled seating area!
Building a planter bench is a rewarding DIY project that adds both functionality and style to your outdoor space. With this comprehensive guide, you're well on your way to creating a beautiful and inviting oasis. Happy building!
