How to Install Vinyl Plank Floor: A Comprehensive Guide
Vinyl plank flooring has become a popular choice among homeowners due to its durability, water resistance, and ease of installation. If you're considering a DIY project, this guide will walk you through the process step by step, ensuring a professional-looking result.
Preparation: Tools and Materials Needed
Before you start, gather all the necessary tools and materials:
- Vinyl plank flooring
- Underlayment (if not attached to the planks)
- Tapping block
- Circular saw or utility knife
- Measuring tape
- Chalk line
- Hammer
- Safety glasses
- Knee pads (optional but recommended)
Calculate the Amount of Vinyl Planks Needed
Measure the length and width of your room, then multiply these figures to determine the total square footage. Add an extra 10-15% for waste and cuts. Most vinyl planks come in packs that cover approximately 20-30 square feet.

Prepare the Subfloor
Ensure your subfloor is clean, flat, and dry. Vinyl planks can be installed over concrete, plywood, or existing flooring, provided it's in good condition. If necessary, use a self-leveling compound to fill in any low spots. Allow the subfloor to dry completely before installing the underlayment and vinyl planks.
Install the Underlayment (if needed)
If your vinyl planks don't have an attached underlayment, install a separate one. This provides additional cushioning, reduces noise, and helps prevent moisture from reaching the subfloor. Roll out the underlayment perpendicular to the direction you'll be laying the vinyl planks. Use a utility knife to cut it to size, and tape the seams together.
Start Installing the Vinyl Planks
Begin in the left-hand corner of the room, with the groove side of the plank facing the wall. Use a tapping block and hammer to tap the plank into place. Stagger the seams between rows to create a stronger, more stable floor. Use a circular saw or utility knife to cut planks to fit around obstacles like door frames or pipes.

Dealing with Door Frames
Measure the height of the door frame, then cut the first row of planks to that height. Install these planks along the walls where the doors are located. This will allow the doors to swing freely over the new flooring.
Installing Planks Around Obstacles
For obstacles like pipes or radiators, measure and mark the plank where you need to make the cut. Use a circular saw or utility knife to cut out the necessary shape. Test the cut plank to ensure it fits correctly before installing it.
Finishing Up
Once you've installed all the planks, replace the baseboards and trim. Allow the flooring to sit undisturbed for at least 24 hours before moving heavy furniture back into the room. This gives the planks time to fully acclimate to their new environment.
Tips for a Successful Installation
| Tip | Description |
|---|---|
| 1 | Always leave a small expansion gap (about 1/4 inch) between the vinyl planks and the walls. This allows for expansion and contraction due to temperature and humidity changes. |
| 2 | If you're installing vinyl planks in a room with cabinets, install the planks first, then trim the cabinets to fit around the new flooring. |
| 3 | Never install vinyl planks in a room with a concrete slab foundation that's subject to moisture. The moisture can cause the planks to buckle or warp. |
By following these steps and taking your time, you can achieve a beautiful, long-lasting vinyl plank floor. Happy installing!
