Factors Contributing to High Costs of Living
The high cost of living in these California cities can be attributed to several factors:
Housing
Housing is by far the most significant contributor to the high cost of living in these cities. According to Zillow, the median home value in San Francisco was over $1.6 million in 2017, while in Santa Monica, it was around $1.4 million. Even in San Jose, the median home value was over $1 million. Rentals are also expensive, with one-bedroom apartments in San Francisco averaging around $3,500 per month in 2017.
Economic Factors
The strong economies of these cities, driven by tech, finance, and other industries, contribute to their high costs of living. High demand for goods and services, coupled with limited supply, leads to increased prices. Additionally, the high cost of doing business in these cities can result in higher prices for goods and services.
Location and Quality of Life
Many of these cities offer desirable amenities, such as beautiful beaches, vibrant cultural scenes, and excellent dining options. Their proximity to major transportation hubs, natural wonders, and other attractions also adds to their appeal. However, these desirable features come at a premium, further driving up the cost of living.
Comparing Cost of Living Categories
To better understand the high cost of living in these cities, let's compare some of the key cost of living categories for San Francisco and the U.S. average (based on Numbeo data from 2017):
| Cost of Living Category | San Francisco | U.S. Average |
