OSHA's General Requirements for Fall Protection
OSHA's fall protection requirements are designed to protect employees working at heights of four feet or more in general industry and six feet or more in construction. Employers must provide fall protection systems, such as guardrails, safety nets, personal fall arrest systems, or positioning systems, depending on the specific work environment and hazards.

Employers are also required to train employees on the proper use of fall protection equipment and systems. This training must be provided in a language and vocabulary that the employee understands.
Guardrail Systems

Guardrail systems are one of the most common fall protection methods. They consist of a top rail, midrail, and toe board, designed to prevent employees from falling off an elevated surface. OSHA requires guardrails to be at least 42 inches high, with a top rail capable of withstanding a downward force of 200 pounds applied within 2 inches of the top edge.
Guardrails must also have a midrail or mesh to prevent objects from falling through the guardrail. Additionally, the guardrail system must be able to withstand a horizontal force of 200 pounds applied in any direction within 2 inches of the midrail.
Safety Net Systems

Safety net systems are designed to catch employees who fall from an elevated surface. OSHA requires safety nets to have a safety factor of at least two and be able to withstand a drop test of 500 pounds. The net must also be secured to a structural member or other approved means to prevent the net from moving or collapsing.
Safety nets must be installed as close as practicable to the work surface, with a maximum clearance of 8 feet between the net and the work surface. Additionally, the net must be inspected before each use and after any event that could damage the net.
OSHA's Requirements for Personal Fall Arrest Systems

Personal fall arrest systems are designed to arrest a fall and limit the fall distance and deceleration distance. These systems consist of a full-body harness, lanyard, deceleration device, and anchor point.
OSHA requires personal fall arrest systems to be capable of withstanding a 5,000-pound force applied to the system in a downward direction. The system must also be able to limit the fall distance to 6 feet or less and the deceleration distance to 3.5 feet or less.

Deceleration devices are designed to absorb the energy of a fall and limit the force of the arrest. OSHA requires deceleration devices to be capable of withstanding a 900-pound force applied to the device in a downward direction.
Regular training, inspection, and maintenance of fall protection equipment are crucial to ensure its effectiveness. Employers must also provide a safe means of access and egress to and from the work area.
