"Master Hardwood Floor Sanding: The Ultimate Guide to Hardwood Floor Sander Edgers"

Mastering Hardwood Floor Sanding: The Role of a Sander Edger

Embarking on a hardwood floor refinishing project? You're likely to come across two essential tools: the hardwood floor sander and its trusty sidekick, the sander edger. While the sander is responsible for the bulk of the work, the edger plays a crucial role in achieving a professional, seamless finish. Let's delve into the world of hardwood floor sanding and explore the importance of the sander edger.

Understanding Hardwood Floor Sanding

Hardwood floor sanding is a multi-step process that involves preparing the floor, sanding, staining, and sealing. The primary goal is to remove old finishes, smooth out imperfections, and create a uniform surface ready for staining and sealing. This process requires the right tools, techniques, and patience to achieve the desired results.

The Hardwood Floor Sander: The Workhorse

The hardwood floor sander is the workhorse of the refinishing process. It's designed to sand large, flat areas efficiently. However, it struggles with edges, corners, and tight spaces. This is where the sander edger steps in.

Introducing the Sander Edger: The Detail Master

The sander edger is a versatile tool designed to tackle edges, corners, and tight spaces that the floor sander can't reach. It's typically smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable than the floor sander, allowing it to get into those hard-to-reach areas without damaging them.

Types of Sander Edgers

  • Orbital Edger: These edgers use an orbital motion to sand, which helps prevent swirl marks and provides a smooth finish.
  • Drum Edger: Drum edgers use a spinning drum to sand, offering a more aggressive approach for removing old finishes or dealing with stubborn spots.

The Importance of Using a Sander Edger

Using a sander edger in conjunction with a floor sander offers several benefits:

  • **Improved Finish Quality:** A sander edger ensures that edges and corners are sanded evenly, preventing a two-toned look and achieving a consistent finish.
  • **Time-Saving:** By tackling edges first, you can use a coarser grit on your floor sander, saving time and effort.
  • **Preventing Damage:** Edgers allow you to sand along walls and in tight spaces without damaging them, thanks to their smaller size and maneuverability.

Sanding Technique: Edger First, Then the Floor Sander

To achieve the best results, always use the sander edger before the floor sander. Here's a simple step-by-step process:

  1. Start by using the edger to sand along walls, corners, and tight spaces with the appropriate grit sandpaper.
  2. Next, use the floor sander to sand the main floor area, working in sections and following the grain of the wood.
  3. Finally, use the edger again to clean up any missed spots or to touch up areas that need further refinement.

Safety and Maintenance Tips

When using a sander edger, always prioritize safety:

  • Wear appropriate safety gear, including a dust mask, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
  • Keep the edger's dust collection bag or vacuum attached to minimize dust.
  • Regularly clean and maintain your edger to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

In the world of hardwood floor refinishing, the sander edger is an unsung hero. By understanding its importance and how to use it effectively, you'll be well on your way to achieving professional, stunning results. So, the next time you embark on a hardwood floor sanding project, don't forget to give your sander edger its due.

Sand them back using a drum sander: 40/60grit 2. Use an edger for the edges ;) 3. Get into the corners with either a needle edger or a hand scraper 4. Punch and fill any nail holes 5. Another sand and then buff: 80/100grit - use an orbital for the edges 6. Coat using BLANCHON Iceberg - 3 x coats and we highly recommend adding the Aqua Pro hardener to the final coat (mix thoroughly using a helix mixer attachment). This floor was covered in glue from a previous carpet removal and had a big border frame - but we accepted the challenge of restoring 💪🏻 We started by removing majority of the glue with our @allwaytoolsinc Floor Scraper before hitting the floor at an angle with a belt sander using 36grit Ceramic @ats_abrasives sandpaper. Next we punched all the shiny nail heads with the @mumme_tools 3mm flooring punch and filled with @timbermate_group Wood Putty. Finishing the edges of the room with our @galaxymachines Elite Edger and then scraping those tricky corners with the Allway Tools FE1 floor scraper. Next another sand going up in grit (40/60/80) and then buffing with 100. After all the prep work we can finally coat the floor using 3 x coats of @blanchon_pro Iceberg. Adding the Aqua Pro hardener into the final coat to make it extra durable. Incredible transformation! Glue gone! And we are left with the most beautiful, natural Tassie Oak hardwood floor! A nice neutral base to suit any style.
