I would absolutely love to have an e46 m3 with an n54 swapped into it. However, it is a huge pain in the ass. There is a guy doing it on e46fanatics if I remember right. Check out his thread. Just search for e46 n54 swap. Also it's not really the smartest idea in the world since e46's already have problems tearing out subframe mounts with their torque less motors.

Curious to see if anyone has tried swapping these engines (N20/N52/N54/N55) into older cars. They are a lot of them available in the used market because they were/are fitted to basically every car in the current BMW lineup, they are lightweight, and they make good power. We know they will fit, but what exactly is needed to make them work?

tl;dr swap is going to be the tits. n54 6 speed in e46 with m3/m5 rear end slammed on 19in m6 wheels running 255/285 making 550 whp and weighing in around 3,100 curb. need chassis!

I wanted to go about this as simply as possible and using the 8HP45 from a N55 powered RWD BMW made the most sense. Using this transmission the lower bell housing bolts line up perfectly between the engine and transmission, but the upper two are slightly off.
