General 22RE vs 22R - What's The Difference? By Alfio Capicollo December 27, 2022 The battle between the Toyota 22RE vs 22R is not one that is going to make worldwide headlines, but, for Toyota drivers and car enthusiasts in general it is definitely worth discussing.
With the two heads side to side you can see the difference in the RET and 20r head this makes me think the RET/ ridge top 22r combo will NOT work unless the machinest mills the head, dont know for sure though.
Could you bolt the 22re feul injection onto a 22r? Are the intakes the same? Some models had fuel injection, but the only difference was the addition of some extra bolt holes to the intake manifold side for the EFI intake. This head will retro-fit back to the 1981-'82 head, but you can't use the earlier head on an EFI '83-'84 model.
OK, Ihave searched this forum, yota tech, and pirate but did not find the answer what is the difference between the 22r and 22re? is the EFI the only difference? and will all the accessories from a 22re bolt up to a 22r block? (I have a 22re thats toast and can get a 22r long block cheap.
22r Engine Valve Adjustment
the only dif. is the fuel injection between the two, and other supporting mods, (intake, intake hose, etc.) in an 86 it should already have the 22re unless someone changed it for a carb 22r they went to fuel injection in 85 if im not mistaken.

i have a 22r and my friend has a 22re. my top speed is 75mph on a good day, he easily reaches 90mph. Is there really that much of a performance gain between the two engines or is there some other factor that i dont realize? he has an 88 2wd 5 speed and i have a 85 4wd 5 speed.

as i was saying, there is no difference between a 22R and 22RE long block as long as it's either early ('81-84) or late ('85-95). an '85-up 22R is going to be the exact same long block as an '85-up 22RE. they're the same engine in toyota terms, the "E" just means fuel injection is added on.
