CalCOFI 9807NH CTD Notes
These notes are transcribed from the CTD console ops sheets and 2016 re-processing by JRW.
There were some issues with the .con sensor configurations. There was also problems with the primary conductivity sensor drifting during the cruise. Either that or the salt sub drifted and was not corrected during processing.
A second temperature and conductivity sensor pair was installed after cast 17. Although documented to be on the primary channels, the new sensor pair were installed on the secondary channel. The .con file is incorrect and generates bad temperature and salinity data if the original cast .con files are used.
This problem will be documented and corrected in the raw cast files so the archived file will be correct.
Based on secondary salts, the salinity substandard may have drifted a little from cast 18-70 but not as much as measured by the primary conductivity sensor.
To improve the primary salinity, 13 different offsets were applied; 9 offsets were applied to secondary salinity but much smaller corrections.
Cast 01-7,9: primary salt offset = -0.0100
Cast 08: primary salt offset = -0.415
Cast 10-13: primary salt offset = -0.0198
Cast 14-17: primary salt offset = -0.0316
Cast 18-23: primary salt offset = -0.0248; secondary salt offset = 0.0071
Cast 24-30: primary salt offset = -0.0312; secondary salt offset = 0.0065
Cast 31-37: primary salt offset = -0.0403; secondary salt offset = 0.0071
Cast 38-45: primary salt offset = -0.0469; secondary salt offset = 0.0105
Cast 46-47: primary salt offset = -0.0505; secondary salt offset = 0.0111
Cast 48-57: primary salt offset = -0.0614; secondary salt offset = 0.0122
Cast 58-62: primary salt offset = -0.0681; secondary salt offset = 0.0137
Cast 63-67: primary salt offset = -0.0709; secondary salt offset = 0.0141
Cast 68-70: primary salt offset = -0.0789; secondary salt offset = 0.0141
