CalCOFI 0101JD Data Processing Notes
CalCOFI circa 2001 ran a Seabird 911+ CTD with dual T/C sensor pairs pumped.
A single Beckam/YSI oxygen sensor which often measured poorly (oversaturated) at
the surface during downcasts. Regressing the sensor data versus bottle oxygen
samples helps improve the overall profile. But CTD oxygens in the upper 20m should
be scrutinized for this issue. Future cruises will upgrade to SBE43 oxygen sensors
which are better.
General data notes: primary sensor data look pretty good overall. Review the
primary sensor plots vs bottle data for general data quality. Secondary data are
not as reliable particularly the upcast secondary conductivity sensor data from
100m to surface. Compare bottle salinity sample data for data quality.
The transmissometer is listed on Voltage 0 but data indicate it was on Voltage 1
the entire cruise. This error, which is typically caught, wasn't till processing.

Cast 049, sta 83.42 - a 160m cast, seems to have had pressure sensor issues that
did not interfere with the marker file depths or bottle sample closures. CTD
continuious data are bad and were not repaired by the fixdat.exe Seabird utility.

The oxygen sensor was changed from #13204 to #130120 on voltage 4 on cast 024.
For some reason the O2 sensor #130120 was moved to voltage 6 on cast 040 where
it stayed for the rest of the 66 casts. No other sensor changes were noted.
Separate oxygen regressions were plotted and coefficients applied in three
processes.

GPS in the hdr needed correction on several casts. This was caused by RV Jordan's
GPS to the CTD syncing poorly with Seasoft. GPS data in the mrk & data files are
normally fine. Casts with bad hdr GPS: 039, 040, 042, 043, 049, 050, 051.

Another cast with data issued was cast 008. All upcast data from 145m to surface
is missing. There appears to have been a spikes in the data at that depth so data
collection seems to have halted. Mrk file data shows 170m bottle was the last closed.
IEH file lists shallower data as missing so without the CTD Console Ops notes. I am
unable to specify the cause. Cast 009 appears normal so the problem was transient or
fixed.
