A newsletter from Stephen Bates, MP for Brisbane

Hi Daniel

I’m sending you a quick message today to say how grateful I am to have been your local federal MP for the last three years.

It’s an honour and a privilege to represent you in Canberra and in our community.

As your Greens MP, I’ve worked hard every day to represent you — making real progress on climate and housing reforms, serving 20,000 community meals, delivering over $1.2 million in additional funding for community organisations, clubs and public schools, and organised and cared for our community as we’ve experienced natural disasters.

I’m proud of what we’ve managed to achieve together and I want to keep fighting for you down in Canberra, keeping Dutton out of government and getting Labor to act on the things that matter to our community.

That’s why I’m asking for your [1] vote this election. We have so much more to do.

Let’s keep Dutton out and get Labor to act on the things that matter most to all of us.

I’m really proud of what my team and I have accomplished for Brisbane

Thanks to your support, I have:

  • donated over $60,000 of my salary to fund 20,000 twice-weekly community meals, breaking through social isolation and bringing our communities together,

  • delivered over $1.2 million in additional funding to local community organisations, sports clubs and public schools,

  • coordinated 150 volunteers to help our community recover from Cyclone Alfred,

  • helped more than 4,000 locals get access to the pension, aged care, the NDIS, and into housing.

  • joined hundreds of Brisbane locals to campaign to make Brisbane one of only three electorates in Queensland to vote Yes for a First Nations Voice to Parliament,

  • secured record investment in community health programmes including $300,000 for Open Doors Youth Service’s first trans youth community health clinic, and $300,000 for Brisbane Youth Service to deliver psycho-social care to young people

  • hosted over 120 local community events from family fun days to town hall forums, and

  • helped on the ground with local community campaigns like fighting to protect Victoria Park Barrambin from development, pushing back against pokies in Council-owned venues, and saving live performance venues like the Zoo and Twelfth Night from closure.

And that’s just what we’ve done locally. Little things that don’t get much media attention but make a huge difference in everyday people’s lives.

Nationally, as part of the Australian Greens team, I’ve delivered over $1.7 billion to help homes lower their energy bills, a hard cap on pollution, an extra $3 billion to build more social housing, an agreement that the Australian Government can no longer invest in fossil fuel projects here or anywhere in the world, and much more.

It’s going to be a very tight election.

The LNP and far right activists are spending millions in Brisbane because they’re scared that if I hold this seat, they might finally be held to account.

Pollsters are predicting Brisbane will come down to only a few hundred votes so every single vote counts. If you want to stop Dutton’s LNP from being elected here in Brisbane, you have to vote [1] for me as your Greens MP.

To find out more about where you can vote, go to stephenbates.com.au/voting.

I need your [1] vote this election to make billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share of tax so we can afford the good things we all deserve like dental into Medicare, 100% renewable power, genuinely affordable housing and much more

Your vote is powerful.

Keeping Brisbane Green means we can keep Dutton out and get Labor to act on the things that matter to our community.

If you have any questions or you’re still undecided, please feel free to email me or come say hello at prepoll at City Hall or Enoggera. I’m trying to prioritise getting back to as many emails from locals as possible at the moment, so feel free to get in touch.

Yours in hope,
