2016 AAFP Guidelines for the Management of Feline Hyperthyroidism Clinical context: Since 1979 and 1980 when the first reports of clinical feline hyperthyroidism (FHT) appeared in the literature, our understanding of the disease has evolved tremendously. Initially, FHT was a disease that only referral clinicians treated.
Once hyperthyroidism has been diagnosed, all management options (thyroidectomy, radioactive iodine, anti-thyroid drugs, nutritional management ) should be discussed with pet owners. All options can be ≥ 90% effective for controlling hyperthyroidism when used appropriately.
There are four treatment options for feline hyperthyroidism : medication, radioactive iodine therapy, surgery, and dietary therapy. Each treatment option has its advantages and disadvantages.

Methods of managing feline hyperthyroidism include: THYROIDECTOMY provides a permanent solution. RADIOACTIVE IODINE is considered the gold standard for treatment. ANTITHYROID MEDICATIONS are often oral and needed daily to achieve and maintain their effect.
Hyperthyroid cats are commonly middle-aged or older and often have concurrent diseases. But because FHT is a serious disease that can result in rapid deterioration of the patient, the Panel recommends the treatment of all diagnosed cats, including those animals with comorbidities.

Options for treatment include radioactive iodine, oral antithyroid medication, surgical removal of the adenomatous thyroid gland, and an iodine-deficient therapeutic diet. The treatment of choice is radioactive iodine (131 I), which will provide a cure in more than 95% of cases.
