What is Micro Beam Construction?

Micro beam construction involves the use of small-scale, high-strength beam components engineered for precision load distribution. These beams, often fabricated from advanced composites or high-grade steel, enable lighter yet stronger structural frameworks. Used widely in residential and commercial projects, micro beams optimize material use while enhancing design flexibility and reducing environmental impact.

In modern construction, engineered wood products have revolutionized the way builders and architects design structural frameworks. Among these products, Micro Lam beams -also known as LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) beams -stand out as one of the most reliable and widely used structural components. They are designed to handle heavy loads, span long distances, and provide superior performance.

Microllam / LVL Beams Recently a reader asked: "What Exactly Is A Microllam"? It's understandable that there could be confusion because the industry is full of all kinds of engineered lumber today. In this article I'd like to point out what a Microllam or LVL beam is. Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is an engineered wood.

Microlam beams outshine traditional lumber in several key areas, particularly in terms of spanning capabilities, strength, and durability. Understanding these differences will empower builders and architects to make informed choices tailored to their project's requirements, ensuring successful construction outcomes. From window openings to garage door headers, Microllam® LVL is a versatile solution that supports heavy loads without worry.

Our manufacturing process creates uniform and predictable products, all with a limited lifetime warranty. Microllam ® LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) is one of the older Trus Joist ® products but still a versatile performer in a wide range of structural applications. Microllam ® LVL is engineered from large sheets of veneer laminated together to form a rectangular beam product.

Each veneer is graded ultrasonically so the veneer mix can be tailored to meet the required design characteristics. This. The successful design and installation of engineered wood beams such as Microllam® LVL, TimberStrand® LSL and Parallam® PSL goes beyond just looking up a member in a table.

A microbeam is a narrow beam of radiation, of micrometer or sub-micrometer dimensions. Together with integrated imaging techniques, microbeams allow precisely defined quantities of damage to be introduced at precisely defined locations. Thus, the microbeam is a tool for investigators to study intra- and inter-cellular mechanisms of damage signal transduction.

Essentially, an automated imaging. These small ("micro") beams are typically 2-4" wide, 4-6" high and range in length from 18" to 96" and can be laminated from strips of hardwood, softwood or combinations thereof. The two most popular approaches are collimation and magnetic focusing.
