The Christ Church and Farley Hill Beagles

The pack has existed for almost 140 years, providing enormous pleasure to both students and the wider community. Countless Oxford University and more recently Oxford Brookes University students have enjoyed following the beagles and each year the pack has been run and hunted by student masters. Many would not have taken up field sports but for the CCFHB. Over the past decade, the pack has seen two of its masters go into hunt service and one become an amateur huntsman, and there is a strong community of CCFHB alumni throughout the hunting world.

Today, there are 20 couple of hounds under the care of David Brown, full-time kennel huntsman. David has been with the CCFHB for ten years and has seen generations of students take up our sport. Hounds meet twice a week through the season, usually with two huntsmen alternating the meets between them and a number of undergraduate whippers-in. The traditional week in Northumberland is hugely well-supported (with around 20 people in the party this year) and continues to provide an education for the "new entry", two-legged and four-legged alike! Equally well-supported is the annual ball, one of the best of the Oxford year, with over 300 guests at the latest one this February. In short, Oxford beagling is as popular as it has ever been.

CCFHB fund raising appeal

Following many years of patronage by the late David Peake, the Christ Church and Farley Hill Beagles is now in the same position as every other pack of hounds in the country – our survival depends on the ongoing generosity of our support base. We have established a fund raising committee to coordinate efforts to keep the pack going, the members are listed below. The committee would like firstly to thank those who have already donated to the Christ Church and Farley Hill Beagles. When we began the fundraising process it was not certain that the CCFHB would survive, now, thanks to the support of our donors we have raised enough to fund the upcoming season.

To be able to continue the future of undergraduate beagling in Oxford in the longer term we need your help and support. There are lots of people who have enjoyed the benefit of the pack over the years, and we very much hope that you will help us to keep the CCFHB an independent, student-run pack by contributing to our cause. Please also spread the word amongst your contemporaries and to friends in the wider hunting world.
