If you're hunting high and low for the trendy new Sparrow Room, a speakeasy-style dim sum parlor behind Bun'd Up eatery in Arlington, just follow the click-click-click of mahjong tiles. The 18th-century Chinese game is the main draw in this ornate, dimly lit room; once mere storage space for the counter-service restaurant it adjoins at 1201 South Joyce Street, it's now decked out in deep. At Sparrow Room, three custom mahjong tables stand on ornate carpets at the center of the room, with another three tables set aside for weekly mahjong classes of up to 24 players.
All the staff, Lo says, are well. Lo and Bun'd Up founder Scott Chung are taking the idea of post-dinner games one step further for their next business venture: Sparrow Room, a mahjong parlor and speakeasy-style dim sum bar opening on Thursday, January 27.
