Laying Floor Tiles: A Comprehensive Guide from B&Q
Embarking on a tiling project can transform your space, adding both style and value to your home. At B&Q, we're here to help you achieve professional results, even if you're a DIY novice. Here's a step-by-step guide to laying floor tiles, covering everything from planning to grouting.
Before You Start: Planning and Preparation
Before you pick up a trowel, it's crucial to plan your tiling project carefully. Measure your space accurately to determine how many tiles you'll need. Remember to account for wastage, typically around 5-10% for cuts and breakages. Also, consider the tile layout, ensuring you start from the center of the room for a symmetrical finish.
Gather your tools and materials. For floor tiling, you'll need:

- Tiles and adhesive
- Tile cutter or wet saw
- Trowel (notch and straight-edged)
- Spacers
- Grout and sealant
- Knee pads and safety glasses
- Buckets, trowel holder, and mixing paddle (for adhesive and grout)
Prepare Your Surface
Ensure your subfloor is clean, dry, and structurally sound. Remove any old flooring, and repair any damage. The surface should be flat and even, with a slight fall to allow for water drainage. If necessary, use a self-levelling compound to create a smooth base.
Laying the Tiles: Step-by-Step
Start by laying out your tiles without adhesive to plan your layout. Use a chalk line to snap a line down the center of the room, then work outwards from this line to ensure a symmetrical finish.
Mix your adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a notched trowel, spread the adhesive onto the floor, working in small sections (around 1m x 1m). Hold the trowel at a 45-degree angle to the surface and use the notches to create grooves. Then, use the straight-edged side to smooth out the adhesive.

Press the tiles firmly into the adhesive, using spacers to maintain even gaps between tiles. Start at the center line and work outwards, ensuring each tile is level with the next. Use a spirit level to check for any high or low spots.
Allow the adhesive to cure for the recommended time (usually 24-48 hours) before grouting. This ensures the tiles are securely bonded to the surface and reduces the risk of grout sticking to the tiles.
Applying Grout
Mix your grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a rubber float, spread the grout diagonally across the tiles, working it into the gaps. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle to the surface to ensure the grout lines are filled.
Allow the grout to set for around 15-30 minutes, then use a damp sponge to remove any excess grout from the tile surface. Rinse and wring out the sponge frequently to avoid spreading grout back onto the tiles.
After 30 minutes, clean the tiles again with a damp sponge to remove any remaining grout haze. Allow the grout to cure for the recommended time (usually 72 hours) before sealing and using the floor.
Caring for Your Tiled Floor
To keep your tiled floor looking its best, clean up spills promptly and avoid using harsh chemicals. Sweep and mop regularly, and reapply sealant every 1-2 years to protect against moisture and stains.
