Seamless Expanko Cork Installation: A Comprehensive Guide
Embarking on a DIY flooring project? Expanko cork is an excellent choice for its durability, eco-friendliness, and luxurious feel. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the installation process, ensuring a flawless finish that will last for years.
Preparation: Gather Tools and Materials
Before you start, ensure you have the following tools and materials:
- Expanko cork flooring
- Underlayment (if not pre-attached)
- Tapping block
- Cork flooring adhesive
- Spacers
- Tape measure
- Chalk line
- Utility knife
- Circular saw (for cutting underlayment)
Calculate the Quantity Needed
Measure your room's length and width, then multiply them to find the square footage. Add an extra 5-10% for waste and cuts. Expanko cork comes in 12" x 36" or 12" x 48" planks, so calculate how many you'll need based on your room's size.

Prepare the Subfloor
Ensure your subfloor is clean, dry, flat, and free of any debris. If it's concrete, it should have a moisture barrier. If it's plywood, it should be at least 5/8" thick and properly secured. Fill any gaps or cracks with a suitable filler.
Lay Out the Underlayment
If your Expanko cork doesn't have a pre-attached underlayment, install one now. It provides a moisture barrier, improves insulation, and reduces noise. Use a circular saw to cut it to size, ensuring it overlaps seams by at least 4". Secure it with adhesive or staples, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Start Installing Expanko Cork
Begin in the left-hand corner of the room, farthest from the door. Apply adhesive to the subfloor using a notched trowel, following the manufacturer's instructions. Lay the first plank in place, ensuring it's square with the wall. Use spacers to maintain a 1/4" expansion gap around the perimeter.

Lay the second plank parallel to the first, staggering the seams at least 6" to create a random pattern. Use a tapping block and hammer to tap the planks together, ensuring a tight fit. Continue this process, working your way across the room.
Installing Around Obstacles
When you reach obstacles like doorways or closets, measure and mark the plank to fit. Use a utility knife to score the plank, then snap it along the line. You can also use a jigsaw or circular saw with a fine-tooth blade for cleaner cuts.
Finishing Touches
Once you've laid the final row, remove the spacers and install baseboards or quarter round trim to cover the expansion gap. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before walking on or installing heavy furniture.
Maintenance Tips
To keep your Expanko cork floor looking its best, clean spills promptly, use protective pads under furniture, and avoid exposing it to excessive heat or moisture. Recoat it with a suitable finish every 3-5 years to maintain its beauty and durability.
