The open upper concept bike features an elevated frame design with strategically exposed upper tube sections that enhance natural airflow beneath the rider. Unlike traditional enclosed frames, this open structure promotes better heat dissipation and reduces wind resistance, creating a more aerodynamic and breathable experience. Often seen in high-performance road and hybrid bikes, this concept merges lightweight engineering with open-air styling for an innovative riding sensation.

At the heart of the open upper concept bike lies its focus on aerodynamics and thermal management. The open upper tubes act as passive cooling channels, allowing cool air to flow through the rider’s torso, improving comfort during long rides. Additionally, the reduced frame mass and open geometry contribute to lower wind drag, giving riders a competitive edge in speed and endurance. This design balances lightweight construction with enhanced breathability, setting a new benchmark in cycling innovation.

Manufacturers typically use high-strength aluminum or carbon fiber to build open upper frame bikes, ensuring durability without sacrificing weight. These materials allow precise shaping of open upper sections that maintain rigidity while providing targeted ventilation. Advanced welding and component integration preserve strength, making the frame both lightweight and structurally sound. The result is a premium finish that combines durability with cutting-edge performance technology.

The first bike to launch out of our new model range is a very special one. The U.P.PER. CONCE.PT will be made in only 2 sizes (Medium and Large) in very limited quantities (125 per size in a nod to our OPEN 12.5 celebration).

The U.P.PER. CONCE.PT molds will then be retired, so no more of these concept frames will ever be produced again. Following the recent release of its UPPER CONCEPT bike, OPEN is now releasing the UPPER 2.0, its more obtainable, do-it-all gravel bike for the masses.

Then & Now: The Original UP vs. Open Cycle has revealed the new U.P.PER. CONCE.PT.
Discover the OPEN U.P.PER. CONCE.PT frameset: a minimalist, high-performance design with comfort, aerodynamics, and custom finishes. OPEN UPPER Concept Gravel Bike The first fruits of 'OPEN 2.0', the UPPER CONCEPT is a rapid, high-comfort gravel bike with true-to-ride aero that doesn't get lost in the weeds.
The Specs of the OPEN U.P.PER. CONCE.PT Although the U.P.PER. CONCE.PT was only available as a frameset, our test bike came as a complete high-end build, consisting of frame, fork, integrated one-piece cockpit and a matching round seatpost.
Everything is designed around performance and reduction, not versatility. After introducing the blueprint for the world of gravel bikes, OPEN is back with a new bike - one that introduces a new production story for the brand, and some clever new tech in places you might not expect. Tom also gets Gerard Vroomen and Andy Kessler to open up about gravel the future of bike design.
This is a long one, but it's worth it, so grab a coffee and dig in. Gerard Vroomed and Andy Kessler are working hard to keep OPEN small. Each bike they make is one they are proud to love and ride.
I've ridden both the OPEN WI.DE. and UPPER for thousands of miles over almost 5 years and can attest to their no-nonsense versatility, comfort and performance. But, heading into 2025, UDH is looming large and OPEN is teasing their new U.P.PER.
CONCE.PT that will. "An incredible bike. Despite the mountain bike tires, you feel like you're riding a road bike.
Innovative frame concept, smart details, light. With this versatility, the U.P. will likely offer an important push to the development of all gravel bikes.".
OPEN puts aerodynamic shaping where it actually pays off: the headtube, fork, bar, and downtube - the front of the bike where airflow is still clean. That means less drag when you're pushing speed on pavement or racing gravel. But OPEN doesn't chase aero at the cost of comfort, because if the bike beats you up, you can't stay low and fast anyway.
