Understanding Stair Tread Shelves

Stair tread shelves, also known as under-stair shelving or staircase storage, refer to the installation of shelves on the underside of your staircase. This type of shelving is designed to fit the specific dimensions of your staircase, providing a custom, built-in look that can enhance the overall aesthetic of your home.

Stair tread shelves can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and glass, allowing you to choose a design that complements your home's decor. They can be installed as part of a new staircase construction or retrofitted into an existing staircase, making them a versatile and accessible storage solution.

Benefits of Stair Tread Shelves

One of the primary benefits of stair tread shelves is the additional storage space they provide. By utilizing the often-wasted space under your staircase, you can create a practical storage solution for items such as books, decorative objects, or everyday essentials like shoes and coats.

In addition to their practical advantages, stair tread shelves can also add a unique and stylish touch to your home. They can be designed to match the aesthetic of your staircase or serve as a striking contrast, creating a focal point that draws the eye and adds visual interest to your space.

Design Considerations for Stair Tread Shelves

When designing stair tread shelves, there are several factors to consider to ensure that they not only look great but also function effectively. One crucial aspect is the size and shape of the shelves. They should be designed to fit the specific dimensions of your staircase while also providing enough space to accommodate the items you want to store.

Another important consideration is the weight capacity of the shelves. To ensure safety and longevity, it's essential to choose materials and construction methods that can support the weight of the items you plan to store. Additionally, you may want to consider incorporating features like backing or dividers to prevent items from shifting or falling off the shelves.

Installing stair tread shelves can be a DIY project for those with intermediate woodworking skills, or it can be done by a professional carpenter or staircase specialist. The process typically involves measuring the space under your staircase, cutting and assembling the shelves to fit, and then securing them in place using appropriate hardware and techniques.

For those who prefer a more streamlined approach, there are also prefabricated stair tread shelf kits available that can be easily installed with minimal effort. These kits often come with all the necessary hardware and instructions, making them a convenient option for homeowners looking to add storage to their staircase quickly and easily.

Add a few brackets (into wall studs for maximum strength!) and lay the treads on top. Don’t forget to secure them to the bracket with 3/4” screws underneath. These are solid pine but I’ve also used the solid oak stair treads before too! Would you use stair treads as shelving? | DeLancey DIY | Facebook
