Understanding Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday commemorates the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, and crowds of people laid down palm branches and their cloaks on the road, hailing him as the Messiah. This event is recorded in all four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-10, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19). The palm branches symbolize victory, peace, and triumph, and their use dates back to ancient times.

Traditions of Palm Sunday

Today, Palm Sunday is celebrated with processions where people carry palm branches and sing "Hosanna," a Hebrew word meaning "save now." Some churches distribute palm branches or palm crosses to their congregations. In some cultures, palm branches are woven into crosses or other shapes, and these are displayed in homes and churches throughout the year.
